CHAPTER TWO: STERLING DYNAMICS

1420 Words
The top floor of Sterling Dynamics overlooked the entire city. Glass walls stretched from floor to ceiling while the morning skyline glowed beneath silver clouds. Inside the executive conference room, silence filled the air as investors, board members, and department directors sat around a long black table. Nobody dared speak first. At the head of the table sat Lucas Sterling. Cold. Sharp. Untouchable. His charcoal suit fit perfectly against his tall frame while the silver watch resting against his wrist reflected the dim boardroom lights. Calm confidence radiated from him effortlessly, the kind that came from growing up surrounded by wealth and power. Lucas scanned the financial reports spread across the table before speaking. “The Singapore expansion moves forward next month.” Immediately, one of the board members frowned nervously. “There are concerns about the risks involved.” Lucas barely looked at him. “There are always risks.” The older man hesitated before continuing carefully. “Sterling Dynamics has already invested heavily into the AI development project. Expanding now could create instability.” Lucas leaned back slowly in his chair. “Instability happens when people hesitate.” Silence followed instantly. Nobody challenged him further. Not because they fully agreed with him. Because Lucas Sterling was becoming exactly like his father. And that terrified people. At only twenty eight years old, Lucas had already turned Sterling Dynamics into one of the fastest growing technology corporations in the country. Investors admired him. Business magazines praised him. Elite families wanted connections with him. Power followed him naturally. And Lucas enjoyed it. A soft vibration interrupted the meeting. Lucas glanced briefly at his phone lighting against the table. Nina. For a second, his expression changed slightly. Then it disappeared. Without answering the call, he turned the phone upside down and continued the meeting. “We’re done here,” he said coldly. Chairs shifted immediately as executives began gathering documents in silence. The moment the room emptied, Lucas loosened his tie slightly and walked toward the massive windows overlooking the city below. Everything felt different lately. Success should have made him happier. Instead, he constantly felt irritated. Pressured. Trapped. The sound of heels approaching interrupted his thoughts. “You ignored her call again.” Lucas turned slightly. Victoria Sterling entered the room elegantly, dressed in a cream colored designer outfit that practically screamed old money sophistication. Even in her fifties, Victoria Sterling carried herself like royalty. Perfect posture. Perfect makeup. Perfect cruelty hidden beneath polite smiles. Lucas exhaled quietly. “Mother.” Victoria walked toward the table calmly. “You’re becoming careless.” Lucas frowned faintly. “I was in a meeting.” “You’ve been avoiding that girl for weeks.” Her voice remained smooth but sharp enough to cut. Lucas looked away toward the city again. “I’m busy.” Victoria laughed softly. “No. You’re embarrassed.” Lucas’s jaw tightened slightly. That single word irritated him more than it should have. Embarrassed. Was he? He remembered Nina standing beside him months ago during a private company event, wearing a simple black dress while elite women whispered behind her back. Too plain. Too quiet. Too poor. Lucas hated remembering how uncomfortable he felt that night. Not because Nina did anything wrong. But because she looked painfully out of place beside the luxury surrounding them. Victoria approached slowly. “You are no longer a struggling businessman, Lucas. You represent Sterling Dynamics now.” Lucas remained silent. She continued calmly. “People are watching your every move. Investors care about image. Reputation matters.” “I know.” “Then act like it.” Lucas finally looked at her. “What exactly are you trying to say?” Victoria’s eyes sharpened slightly. “You already know.” Before Lucas could respond, another voice entered casually. “Aunt Victoria is right.” Both turned toward the doorway. Celeste Harrington stepped inside gracefully. Beautiful. Elegant. Untouchably wealthy. Everything about Celeste felt polished to perfection, from her sleek white outfit to the diamond earrings catching the light softly against her dark hair. She smiled at Lucas warmly. “You disappeared after the meeting.” Lucas forced a faint smile. “Busy morning.” Celeste walked closer naturally, like she already belonged beside him. Maybe she did. Their families had been connected for years through business partnerships, political influence, and social circles. Everyone expected them to end up together eventually. Everyone except Nina. Victoria studied them both with clear approval. “The gala tonight is important,” she said smoothly. “Major investors will attend.” Celeste smiled softly. “My father already confirmed our appearance together.” Lucas caught the meaning behind her words instantly. Appearance together. Publicly. Like a couple. Pressure tightened inside his chest. He should have corrected the assumption immediately. Instead, he stayed silent. Victoria noticed. A satisfied look crossed her face briefly before she spoke again. “Lucas, I scheduled a lunch interview for you with Forbes Asia.” “Today?” “Yes.” Lucas rubbed his temple lightly. “Fine.” Victoria approached him slowly before adjusting his tie carefully like he was still a child. “You have everything necessary to dominate this industry.” Her voice lowered slightly. “Do not let emotional attachments weaken you.” Lucas’s expression hardened faintly. Across the room, Celeste watched him quietly. Observant. Calculating. Then she smiled gently. “You look exhausted.” Lucas loosened his collar slightly. “Just work.” Celeste tilted her head slightly. “Or relationship problems?” Lucas gave her a warning look. She laughed softly. “I’m not judging you.” But she was. Everyone was. Because in elite circles, Lucas Sterling dating an unknown woman from an ordinary background had become embarrassing gossip. Nobody understood why he stayed with Nina for so long. Sometimes even Lucas no longer understood it himself. The thought left a bitter feeling inside him immediately. He cared about Nina. Didn’t he? He remembered the first time they met years ago. Nina had been sitting quietly inside a small bookstore café, reading while rain poured outside the windows. Unlike other women around him, she never acted impressed by his money or family name. She treated him normally. Maybe that was what attracted him initially. Back then, being around Nina felt peaceful. Simple. Real. But now his world had changed. Everything moved faster. Bigger deals. More pressure. Higher expectations. And Nina no longer fit naturally into the future forming around him. A soft knock interrupted the silence. An assistant entered nervously. “Mr. Sterling, the interview team has arrived.” Lucas nodded once. “I’ll be there shortly.” The assistant hurried away immediately. Victoria stepped back with quiet satisfaction. “Remember tonight’s gala.” Lucas grabbed his suit jacket from the chair. “I know.” As he walked toward the exit, Celeste suddenly spoke again. “Will Nina attend tonight?” Lucas paused briefly. The question irritated him instantly for some reason. “Yes.” Celeste smiled slowly. “That should be interesting.” Lucas left without responding. Outside the executive floor, Sterling Dynamics buzzed with life. Employees moved quickly through luxurious hallways while giant digital screens displayed stock updates, international partnerships, and AI development presentations. Everywhere Lucas walked, people straightened instantly. Respect. Fear. Admiration. He had grown used to all of it. Yet somehow, the higher he climbed, the more distant his old life felt. His phone vibrated again. Nina. This time, he stared at the screen longer. Then finally answered. “Nina.” Her soft voice reached him immediately. “Did I interrupt work?” Lucas closed his eyes briefly. “No.” A small silence followed. Then she asked quietly: “Are we still going together tonight?” Lucas glanced toward the massive Sterling Dynamics logo glowing across the lobby wall. Everything around him demanded perfection. Status. Power. Image. And suddenly, the thought of bringing Nina into tonight’s elite gathering felt exhausting. Still, he answered: “Yes.” He heard her soft relieved breath through the phone. That tiny sound made guilt twist unexpectedly inside his chest. “Okay,” she whispered. “I’ll see you tonight.” Before hanging up, she added gently: “I miss you.” Lucas froze slightly. But before he could answer properly, an investor approached him with a smile and extended hand. “Mr. Sterling.” The moment broke instantly. Lucas disconnected the call without realizing it. And somewhere across the city, Nina stared silently at her darkened screen again.
