Chapter Two I looked over at the booth and saw the woman in question talking to someone in front of her table. They were laughing, and then she leaned down and pulled out a plastic bag from under the table, while at the same time reaching for the book in the other person’s hand. “Uh, yeah. That’s who I got it from,” I replied. Then I turned back to the woman sitting next to me. She smiled, and, in an instant, something struck me as odd about it. But before I could put any more thought into her smile, she held out her hand. “I’m Gayle,” she said. I took her hand in mine, and she gave it a gentle squeeze. “Jess,” I replied.
