It took a couple of hours to reach the opening of the tunnel where they paused for a drink of water. They stood in the entrance, sand swirling across the ground from the hot breeze that entered the tunnel, doing nothing to reduce the heat of the morning. Below they saw a handful of jinni returning to the city from the direction of the lizards.
Once the jinni had entered the city, they turned and trudged along the tunnel, Penelope walking beside Luca holding his hand, the hunters behind them with their torches. “I forgot how long this tunnel was.” Remembering Malachi’s comment in the vehicle, she said, “If this is what camping is all about no wonder we never went.”
