A WAVE OF GRIEF WELLED up in Jack's chest, and his throat tightened. He tried to let out the pain in a wail, but it came out as a muted sob. He blinked against the tears that threatened to fall, and the world around him resolved into a muddy grey. His heart clenched to find himself back in the greyscape. Eyes narrowing against the bright slate, he scanned the flat land, turning in a sluggish circle. His shoulder throbbed, and he brought his hand up to rub the ache away. An electric shock coursed down his arm when he touched his skin. Looking down, he saw he was naked, and a spider web of black lines radiated from where he'd been stabbed.
