5 ONE MESS AFTER ANOTHER On the morning of the General’s arrival the sun shone brightly and even the flowers seemed to be at their best to welcome the idea of visitors. Inside, the news of their arrival went down like a lead balloon. Apart from William, the one who viewed the prospect with most alarm was Jarvis. Even his usual suave composure seemed to desert him. His upper lip positively quivered. ‘How many did you say were coming, sir?’ William’s reply did nothing to reassure him. ‘As well as my father, he’s bringing half his staff, as far as I can gather,’ he added, kicking at the shingle moodily. Jarvis swallowed. ‘Half his staff?’ ‘Yes, I’ve no idea how many. How are we going to cope?’ ‘I shall do my best. Most disconcerting.’ Then his customary sense of service came to his aid
