Thirty-Nine
The sudden increase in noise outside the lab caused Hannah to rush to the door, heart racing.
‘Are they back?’ She latched hold of Barrett’s arm. He’d designated himself her unofficial bodyguard and spent most of his waking hours keeping watch by the door. The only time he left her alone was to go to the kitchen to get them both a meal or when she was in her room. No matter how many times she told him it wasn’t necessary, he insisted Hanson had ordered him to guard her.
He gave her a shy smile, ducking his head as he said, ‘I don’t know. Wait here and I’ll find out what’s happening.’
‘No way am I staying here.’ Hannah glared at him when he moved to block the doorway.
