12 The Library Esmat was in the atrium talking to a short stocky man in a dark business suit. He glanced across and inclined his head to Zahra as she walked towards them. ‘This is my husband Abbas Agha—this is, er—Zahra Ghafoori from Afghanistan. She’s going to be Madar djan’s companion …’ Esmat rushed through the introductions. ‘Welcome, Zahra Khanoum, I’m pleased to meet you.’ Abbas smiled and shook her hand. His voice was like Karim’s, deep and melodic with a polished accent. ‘My mother will love ...’ he began, but Esmat interrupted him. ‘I’ll see you later, darling, I’m sure you’re busy.’ She dismissed him with a nod. He excused himself and headed for a room further round the atrium and closed the door with a faint click. ‘So!’ Esmat said brightly, rubbing her hands together. ‘
