PHEMELIA’s

Chapter Two Phemelia's POV “Alpha Avolio MarKane!” I heard the shriek of a Beta female call out, followed by the greetings of our pack elders. Evening came and the moon shone like a lighted large gemstone in the sky. I could feel tension rippling like electricity through the air. The moment he entered the hall, the room held its breath. Conversation died mid-syllable like the sight before them held them in a chokehold. The rustling of silk and expensive boots ceased, even the candles seemed to recoil, their flames bowing low as if in instinctive submission. I did not need to lift my head to know who had arrived. My wolf, quiet, shrunken, curled tight inside my ribs and whimpered. Avolio MarKane. “We're pleased you graced us with your presence, Alpha Avolio.” The Beta female from earlier greeted with such fluidity, causing the other females to regard her with open hostility. “The pleasure is mine.” His deep polite voice caused gasps to arise around him, each eye baring their greed and desire like an exhibition. The air thickened, not from the overzealous choking scent of expensive perfume but from the aura of the dominant Alpha gracing the hall with his presence. Power rolled off him in slow, lethal waves, pressing down on my shoulders until my spine bowed. I wasn't the only one, every Alpha and Beta straightened instinctively, backs snapping into reverence of the predator before them. Omegas were more affected because of our constituency of unhealthy submission, our wolves have become so tame, a little outlet of power from an Alpha or Beta crushed us. Like now. All omegas shrank. I shrank. I kept my eyes on the floor, breath shallow, hands trembling around the silver tray I carried. Invisible. Stay invisible. I slithered behind some Beta females. But his presence was not content to pass through the room. His wolf was awake. I could feel it, I didn't know why or how but it felt like a hungry storm, coated with violence, control stretched thin over something monstrous. My pulse thrummed beneath my skin, every instinct I had gained from hiding screamed that I was prey standing in open ground. And then that scent. Crushed dark chocolate. Smoky, coffee-like aroma from him wafted up my nostril. My wolf, who had been cowering all her life, reared her head, her fangs bared in a snarl, my heart thumped. Once. Mine. The reaction was instant. Avolio’s steps faltered. Like he sensed something…wrong. The shift in him was palpable, a growl rumbled low in his chest, and his eyes widened slightly, like he couldn’t believe he could ever make such a sound. I must be crazy! how could I for an instant think he could be mine?! I saw him regain his balance, then move. He was supposed to pass the line of adorned Alpha and Beta women, sophistication rolled off their eager gazes with certainty at becoming whom this Alpha needed. They were basically advertising themselves for pick up, every move of their hands intentional. Cunning. Smart. He was supposed to choose one of them. Instead, he stopped. Everyone held their breaths. Then I felt it before I saw it. The weight of his attention crashing into me, pinning me in place. Slowly, I lifted my eyes. Cold ocean-blue eyes that had no borders, locked onto mine. The invisible omega had been seen again. This is not what I wanted. Now I wouldn't be able to escape the death penalty, I wouldn't be able to see the blue sk….I wouldn't be able to dream of hope anymore…. My heart slammed so hard it hurt. Heat coiled low in my belly despite the catastrophe that had befallen me. Sudden, traitorous, leaving me dizzy with shame and fear. His gaze stripped me bare, not with lust but with something darker. Ownership. He turned slowly, stepping toward me with seamless ease. No, no, no….this canNOT be happening. The elders stirred, sharp whispers cutting through the stunned quiet. “Alpha MarKane…..please that's not wh—” At the sound of the word ‘not’, Avolio threw a cold glare at the Elders, silencing them. His expression said loud and clear, that he wouldn't tolerate being told what to do. And that dangerous man stalked toward me. May..maybe it wasn't me he was going to approach, after all I'm behind a Beta. The Beta female in front of me surged forward suddenly, desperate, tearing open her yellow silk gown to reveal creamy breasts, their n****e ends round, pink and dry but ready to be devoured. She pressed herself into his path. Gasps erupted. Avolio did not slow, he didn't flinch or stop in his tracks at the ridiculous sight. He looked at her with pure disdain and shoved her aside as though she were nothing more than a flimsy excuse in his way. She hit the floor hard. Murmurs exploded. Then he growled. Not loud, but with control and dominance. The sound rolled through the hall in waves, echoing through the night like a threat. Wolves dropped to their knees. My bones shook. My wolf fought to be released, stretching beneath my skin. It took all I had to comport myself. Silence followed. He stopped before me and extended one hand, I glanced up slowly, bit by bit, till his face was in my line of sight, confusion visible in my gaze. He folded his fingers in, then extended them again….I guess for good measure. If I didn't get it before, I got it now. He wanted me. My breath caught as the truth sank in, sharp and irreversible. I was no longer invisible. If I take that hand, everything I know dies, becomes past,… and I will be walking into something far more dangerous than this hell.
