Ezekiel POV
I knock at the door to the Alpha’s office. “Excuse me Alpha, may I please speak with you.” on the other side of the door I hear him respond, “Yes Ezekiel, I was expecting you. Please come in” I open the door and enter his office. It is a large room that greatly resembles a study rather than an office with a good balance of comfort and business. It has his desk in front of a wall-length bookshelf with two wooden chairs in front of it on the left side, and a coffee table with a couch behind it, and two comfy chairs on either side of the coffee table along the right side of the room. There are many windows along the far wall that provide natural lighting yet have blackout curtains to make the room completely dark as well. I sit on one of the chairs directly in front of his desk. Currently, he is using evening lighting provided by the windows and a single lamp next to his desk.
“Great so please give me the report on David's progress in the human school.” He says as soon as I sit.
“Right, well all good news on that front. He is doing amazingly well academically and socially. His teacher voiced absolutely no concerns of any kind and she is very optimistic about his future. It seems that he is like the average star student. Nothing seems to reveal that he is different or cause his teacher or companions to suspect anything. Rather, he is fitting in very well and doing a remarkable job.” I state.
“Wonderful, as expected. I'm glad to hear that. Were there any complications because you went in our stead?” he asks worried that their absence may have caused unwanted questions or assumptions to arise.
“No, she didn't question it much. I think we took each other by surprise and it was naturally distracting.” I say, hinting at the real reason I want to speak to him.
He quickly caught on. “What do you mean? How did you surprise each other?”
“Well, Alpha...you see...that's the real reason I wanted to speak to you. As it turns out, David's teacher is actually my mate.” I look at him to gauge his reaction.
“David’s teacher? David’s HUMAN teacher? Have you spoken with her? Will she be willing to make the transition? Do you believe that she will be a better Luna than a naturally born she-wolf? Wouldn't one breed to be Luna be more suitable?” The way he phrases the questions makes it seem like they are not actually questions but prompts to lead me to the same conclusion he's already decided.
“Alpha, with all due respect. I do not want a Luna that is not my true mate. My mate would make the perfect Luna whether she was raised for the role or not. The moon Goddess does not make mistakes. My mate is the best suited for the job.”
He looks at me pensively “I see, it is decided then. She will be changed and will rule at your side as Luna when you take over for me. Bring her here and change her by the full moon next week. Afterward, we can train her and teach her our ways. Then in three months' time, we shall do the transfer of power and make you the new Alpha. I'll be just in time to enjoy the longer days and end of the snowy season for my retirement...This news will upset our guest, but she will just have to accept that fate has decided.”
I look at him. There were too many things I wanted to clarify due to his statement. Did he say, guest? Wait, I must tell him about my mate first. “Alpha, I thank you for understanding and being willing to accept my mate. But I'm afraid that is not all. Again she is human so I have yet to talk to her about me or us. That can be a bit of a long process depending on the situation. Unfortunately, this is one of those situations. I wanted to let you know because I do intend on courting her and making her my Luna. However, there is another detail I have yet to mention...you see...she has a child…”
“A child!” he interrupts me. “Wait, you're telling me that your mate is not only human but has had the offspring of another? Is she still together with this other human? Do you intend to separate them? If she is not then, Is the father involved with the child? How exactly do you plan on dealing with all the variables that come into play with a human child?” He looked agitated. He takes a deep breath and says, “son, is it not better to reject her? The child only complicates everything. I have brought a she-wolf worthy of ruling by your side.” I look at him incredulously. He raises a finger and continues. “She is already here. We went to the Pine forest pack. She is the youngest daughter of the Alpha. She has Alpha blood and will bear strong pups. She has been bred in the ways of a Luna since she was a child so she could mate an Alpha. This would be the best way to create a strong alliance with them. She is the best choice, Ezekiel. You can not be sure that things with the human mother can work.”
I feel anger beginning to rise. “You have already brought her? She is staying here? You know, I have been waiting for my mate. You can't possibly believe that I would agree with this.”
His voice softens slightly. “Ezekiel, finding your mate is never a guarantee. And even if you do, they may not be an option. A Luna’s role is important. They not only support the Alpha, but they are also the heart of the pack. You need a Luna to rule effectively. Although you can rule on your own, having a Luna makes you stronger. As you are aware I have been preparing to pass on to you my Alpha status and retire. I am still strong and not quite old but you are fit enough to take over for me and I can enjoy the rest of my days at your mother's side. I'm not rushing to make you take over but I took over the pack for my father at your age and it is time for you to do the same.”
“Father...Alpha. I understand it is time for me to take over. And I HAVE found my mate. She is amazing. She is the most beautiful creature I have ever laid eyes on. I want her to be my Luna. I want her by my side. I do not want to choose another because it's easier nor do I even want to consider rejecting her. The child is not a problem for me. She is no longer attached to her previous mate nor do I believe he is involved in their lives.”
“I understand, and You may not like the idea but our guest will stay as your potential Luna. I can give you time to gauge whether things with your human mother can work. But until you are completely sure that she will become a wolf and join the pack then and only then will we send the girl home. Until then we shall make her feel welcome and you will get to know her and be courteous. You can not disregard her for now. So make yourself presentable and go introduce yourself. She is in a guest room on our floor at the end of the hall.” He says with finality and dismisses me.
I can not believe that the reason he missed David’s parent-teacher conference was to go get a girl to be my Luna. On the one hand, I'm incredibly angered that he did this and will not take my refusal to have anybody but my true mate. On the other hand, he didn't completely dismiss my true mate although she is human and a mother. At least I got to make my intentions clear. But since he is still the Alpha I must go see this girl now. Afterward, I can do what I really want and plan my coffee date with my mate.
