Chapter eight: Can I have your number?

607 Words
Teresa's POV After I finished talking about David’s classwork. I see Ezekiel stand and move to shake my hand so I stand and extend my hand to him. “Everything looks great, obviously David is excelling here in no small part thanks to you. Thank you very much for all your hard work. I hope to see more good things in the future.”Ezekiel states while taking my hand for a handshake similar to the one we had earlier. His words make me blush yet again. -what is wrong with me! I’m a mother, not a lovestruck teenager. Why can't I seem to get it together? “Oh it's truly my pleasure, thank you for coming. I know everyone's schedule can get busy but it's always important to be aware of your child's schooling. So please Inform Your parents and please take this paper. It contains the school website, information on how to obtain your student's assignment, and where you can locate grades and progress online. It also contains my school email in case you or your parents have any questions.” I say while handing them the sheet I prepared for all my parents today. Then I take a deep breath in an attempt to calm my nerves. “Yes thank you, but Ms. Sanchez, if you don't mind my being forward. Could I have your number, and could I invite you out for a coffee?” What! I think to myself. Why in the world does this gorgeous man want to take me out? Did I not just mention I have a child? “I don’t make it a habit of going out with my students' family members,” I respond with as much calm as I can muster. To that, he replies, “In a small town like this almost everyone is a students’ family member, and I am not a parent nor caretaker of any of your students. I’m just here representing my parents who were busy today and couldn’t make it themselves. Please do me the honor of accepting my invitation.” Good Lord who still speaks so formally these days! How can I refuse when he says it like that! “I might have to bring my son along. Would that be okay?” I repeat that I have a son in case that wasn't clear earlier. He smiles at me. “Of course I would love to meet him '' wow, not only is my having a child not a deterrent to this guy but he wants to meet my child. But wait, that’s not normal, right? Could he be trying to hurt us? But why say this in front of his brother if he did. This is so nerve-racking. I glance at my student David, he was giving his brother a look of surprise and shock and then smiles. He turns to me and says, “Ms. Sanchez, don't worry my brother is a good guy and I won’t mind you dating him. I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem. And I promise not to tell anyone unless you want me to.” My eyes widened. I feel my face turning beet red. Date him? I mean that would be incredible, who wouldn’t want to date someone so gorgeous. But why would he want me? “I mean, if you don’t mind my situation…and I won’t affect you negatively in any way…I wouldn’t mind grabbing a coffee on the weekend, or something.” I guess I could see what his intentions are...I write my phone number on a sticky note from my desk and hand it to him.
