A flicker of movement caught my eye, just beyond the curtains. My heart lurched, and I tensed, straining to see what it was. Was someone watching me? “Hello?” I called out, my voice barely above a whisper. Nothing. But then, another movement—this time from the opposite corner of the room. I turned, only to see a figure dart behind one of the chairs. My pulse quickened, my hands balling into fists as I tried to prepare myself for whatever—or whoever—it was. And then I saw it.
