It felt like an eternity, but it was probably only a couple of seconds before another wolf burst from the forest—his fur as dark as the night, streaked with gold. He barreled into the wolf on my back, tearing him away from me with such ferocity that I could barely comprehend it. The two wolves clashed in a whirlwind of teeth and claws, their battle filling the air with snarls and growls that made the ground beneath me tremble. I tried to move, tried to push myself up, but my body refused to obey. The pain radiated from every nerve, draining my strength. My vision blurred, the world spinning, and I felt myself slipping away, inch by inch, into unconsciousness.
