26 The past year had been a whirlwind for Claire. She wore the scars of life in her heart, but her beauty and youthful optimism remained, graciously, intact. She had stood nearly face to face with Mr. Death - and spit him in the eye. Nothing would ever be the same since that horrible day in the hospital.
