IT SEEMS LIKE OVERKILL but the Captain insisted. He hired a body guard to take Sukey to school and back every day. The guard is a twenty-something ex-soldier. A woman – Dawn. Tall, fit, with the typical Swedish features of blue eyes and long blond hair. We haven’t told Sukey that Dawn is a guard. We’ve done our best to play down the new security arrangements so as not to frighten Sukey. The Captain’s sensitivity in this matter reflects his new attitude to Sukey. He may be keeping his distance from me, but he is forging a closer bond with Sukey. He no longer treats her as an annoyance coming between our couple. At first I thought it was his way of insulating himself from me. That may be so in part, but I’ve noticed that he is behaving like a real father now.
