Sukey is disobedient

LEFT ALONE IN THE BALL ROOM I had to suffer another round of duty dances. After half an hour I cried off saying I was tired and thirsty. I sat out the rest of the dancing until the Captain returned. He sat down beside me looking rumpled. He offered no explanation for his sudden departure or for his long absence.
When I pressed him he said, “I went to check on Sukey and her friend amongst other things. They’re both fine, fast asleep, and Dawn is on watch.”
“Surely you don’t expect anything to happen to them here tonight on board the Scotia, do you Captain?” I asked him, surprised that he would think Kempton would make an appearance out of the blue again. He must be long gone by now. We haven’t had sight or sound or him for months.
