The autumn air felt like ice on Ava’s cheeks as she walked briskly toward Lincoln High, hoodie pulled tight around her face. Her thoughts churned with everything—her mother’s mounting bills, the false letter from “Ethan,” the way Jordan kept showing up with perfect timing, and Ethan himself… silent and watching.
Everything inside her felt fragile. Unstable.
In class, Jordan greeted her with that familiar lopsided grin.
“You look like you lost a fight with your pillow,” he said, teasing.
Ava rolled her eyes but didn’t smile. “Just tired.”
She didn’t see it, but from across the room, Ethan’s eyes were locked on her. He noticed how pale she was, how distant. And Jordan—he was always there, like a shadow that didn’t belong. Something about him felt… off.
After Class
Ethan stopped Emma Jacobs near the stairwell.
“You helped with that fake note,” he said flatly.
Emma flinched. “What? No—”
“I heard you and Madison laughing about it. How could you?”
Emma shifted awkwardly. “Madison said Ava was getting too close. She wanted to scare her. She wrote the note. I just... I didn’t want her to turn on me.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched. “You let her break down over something that cruel?”
“I didn’t think she’d take it so hard…”
“She almost cried in the hallway. I’ll make sure this ends, Emma.”
He turned and walked away, leaving Emma frozen with guilt.
That Evening – Lila & Loop
The bell above the boutique’s door jingled as a woman walked in—middle-aged, well-dressed, friendly. Ava was restocking scarves while Jordan manned the register.
The customer browsed a bit, then called out, “Excuse me, could one of you help me find something for my daughter? She’s turning eighteen.”
Ava smiled politely. “Of course, ma’am. What does she like?”
As Ava guided her through some gift options, Jordan offered suggestions too, playfully bantering with Ava.
The woman suddenly paused, a warm smile on her face. “Are you two dating?”
Ava and Jordan froze.
“No!” they both said in unison.
The woman chuckled. “That’s surprising. I can feel the chemistry between you two. You’re in sync. It’s refreshing.”
Ava gave an awkward laugh. Jordan just smirked. But inside, his thoughts turned darker.
As if it were that simple.
He watched Ava lean over to fold a sweater, her long hair tumbling over her shoulder. His smile faded.
She’s perfect. Soft. Trusting. Sweet. She just needs time. Let her feel safe with me. Let her come to me first.
He wasn’t going to rush it. No—he had a plan.
A few more weeks. I’ll invite her to my place. Just her and me. My brother won’t be home. She won’t say no if she trusts me enough.
His face remained casual as the customer complimented them both for their help and left with a shopping bag.
Ava noticed Jordan’s far-off stare and snapped her fingers in front of him. “Earth to Jordan.”
He blinked. “Sorry. Zoned out.”
That Night – Home
Ava dragged herself into her room after dinner. Her body ached from work and her chest hurt from holding in her emotions.
A gentle knock sounded.
“Can I come in?” her mom asked.
Ava nodded, and her mother sat beside her on the bed with a warm cup of cocoa. “You look like you’ve been through a lot.”
Ava hesitated. Then everything spilled out. “Ethan. Jordan. Madison bullying me. That stupid note. Everyone thinks I’m weak.”
“You’re not weak,” her mother said firmly. “You’re surviving. You’re helping me. You’re standing up for yourself, and you’re still showing kindness. That’s strength, Ava.”
“I feel like I’m losing pieces of myself,” Ava whispered.
Her mother hugged her tight. “Then let me help you hold the pieces together.”
Somewhere Else – Ethan’s Room
Ethan stared at the laptop screen. He’d filled out a full anonymous report, attaching proof of Madison’s bullying—screenshots, voice recordings, even a short video clip.
If no one else would protect Ava, he would.
He saved the document but didn’t send it yet. He wanted to talk to Ava first, to fix things before making it official.
But deep down, he knew: things were changing. And if he didn’t act soon, it might be too late.
