Episode 2: Forced Together**
Days after their library confrontation, Anastasia was determined to avoid Neo at all costs. She focused on her coursework, pushing the thought of his arrogant smirk out of her mind. But fate, it seemed, had other plans.
Anastasia was reviewing the semester’s group project assignment in her history class when the professor called for everyone’s attention.
“We’ll be pairing up for this project, and I’ve already assigned your partners,” Professor Ray said, looking at his list. “It’s important that you work closely together, as this will be a significant part of your final grade.”
Anastasia listened intently, hoping she would be paired with someone who shared her dedication. Anyone but—
“Anastasia and Neo.”
Her heart sank. She shot a glance across the room, where Neo lounged in his seat, completely unfazed. Of course, he would be laid-back about this. Her, though? She clenched her jaw. This was a disaster.
After class, Neo approached her, his trademark grin plastered on his face. “Guess it’s just you and me, partner.”
Anastasia didn’t bother hiding her irritation. “Great. This project means a lot to me, Neo. So let’s get one thing straight: I’m not going to let your slacking mess up my grade.”
Neo chuckled, clearly amused by her intensity. “Relax, Anastasia. I can actually pull my weight when I want to. Besides, I have no interest in failing either.”
She raised an eyebrow. “You expect me to believe that?”
He shrugged. “Guess you’ll just have to wait and see.”
Reluctantly, they set up their first study session in the library later that week. When Anastasia arrived, she found Neo already there, leaning back in his chair with his feet up on the desk, casually flipping through his phone.
“Unbelievable,” she muttered, sitting down opposite him.
“Nice to see you too,” he teased without looking up.
She set her books down with a thud. “We have a lot of work to do. I’m not going to sit here while you scroll through social media.”
Neo finally put his phone away, leaning forward, his expression more serious than she expected. “Alright, Anastasia. I get it. You don’t trust me, but give me a chance to prove you wrong.”
Anastasia studied him for a moment, her defenses still up. Part of her wanted to dismiss him, but there was something in his tone that made her pause.
“Fine,” she said, her voice softening just a bit. “Let’s get started.”
As they began to work, the tension between them remained, but something shifted. For the first time, Anastasia saw flashes of a different side of Neo—a side that wasn’t all arrogance and charm. He was actually… smart. He contributed ideas she hadn’t considered, and the conversation flowed more easily than she’d anticipated.
But Anastasia wasn’t ready to admit that just yet.
By the end of their session, as they packed up, Neo gave her a half-smile. “See? I’m not all bad.”
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop the small smile tugging at her lips. “We’ll see if that keeps up.”
As they parted ways, Anastasia couldn’t shake the strange feeling settling in her chest. Maybe there was more to Neo than she thought. But was she ready to find out?
