Episode 4: Cracks in the Armor** Anastasia had always prided herself on being in control. She controlled her grades, her schedule, and her future plans. But lately, Neo was throwing that balance completely off. It wasn’t just the way he smiled or teased her, it was the way he seemed to be taking up space in her mind when he wasn’t around—and she hated it. She sighed and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear as she waited for him at their usual study spot in the library. He was late, as usual. "Hey, sorry I'm late," Neo's voice broke through her thoughts as he strolled over, his usual easy smile in place. Anastasia didn’t bother looking up. "You know, one of these days you could actually show up on time." He chuckled and sat down across from her. "Where's the fun in that?" "Fun," she muttered under her breath, flipping through her notes. "You always think everything is about fun." Neo leaned back in his chair, watching her with a smirk. "You say that like it’s a bad thing. Maybe you should try it sometime, Anastasia. Fun doesn’t bite." Anastasia shot him a glare, though there was no real heat behind it. “Some of us don’t have time for distractions.” Neo leaned forward, his expression more serious than usual. “Is that what you think this is? A distraction?” She opened her mouth to respond, but for once, she was at a loss for words. Was that what this was? Just a distraction? Neo watched her closely, waiting, but when she didn’t answer, he let the silence hang between them for a moment before standing up. “Come on,” he said, grabbing his jacket. Anastasia frowned. “What?” “I said, come on. We’re taking a break.” “I’m not going anywhere with you, Neo. We have too much work to do.” He ignored her protests, pulling her out of her seat and dragging her toward the exit. Anastasia barely had time to grab her bag as she stumbled along behind him, her mind spinning. They ended up outside on the campus lawn. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the trees, and the cool breeze swept through the air. Neo finally let go of her wrist, turning to face her with a lopsided grin. “There. Fresh air. Isn’t it nice?” Anastasia crossed her arms, glaring at him. “This is ridiculous. We don’t have time for—” “Relax, Anastasia. The world’s not going to end if you take five minutes off.” She stared at him, incredulous. “I don’t understand you, Neo. How can you be so… so carefree?” Neo’s expression softened, and he shrugged. “It’s not that I don’t care, Anastasia. I just don’t see the point in stressing about every little thing. Life’s short. If you don’t stop to enjoy it, what’s the point?” Anastasia fell silent, her mind racing. There it was again—that flicker of something deeper in him, something she hadn’t expected to see. She opened her mouth to argue, to remind him that not everyone had the luxury of coasting through life like he did, but the words caught in her throat. Instead, she found herself asking, “Do you ever take anything seriously?” Neo’s eyes met hers, and for a moment, his usual playful demeanor vanished. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “I take some things seriously.” She didn’t know why, but her heart skipped a beat at his words. Before she could ask him what he meant, Neo cleared his throat and gave her a crooked smile. “But not tonight. Tonight, we’re going to do something fun.” Anastasia raised an eyebrow. “And what exactly do you have in mind?” “You’ll see,” he said, his grin returning full force. --- The evening air had cooled, and Anastasia found herself standing with Neo outside a small campus café. She glanced at him, suspicious. “What are we doing here?” “You’ll see,” he repeated, holding the door open for her. Inside, the warm glow of the café lights and the soft hum of jazz music filled the room. It was quiet, cozy even, with just a handful of students sitting at tables. Neo led her to a corner booth by the window, and Anastasia couldn’t help but notice how different it was from their usual meeting spots. As they sat down, Neo ordered two hot chocolates before Anastasia could protest. She sighed and crossed her arms, giving him a pointed look. “You know, we really don’t have time for this.” “We’ll make time,” Neo said, leaning back in his seat with a smug smile. As their drinks arrived, Anastasia hesitated. There was something unsettling about how comfortable this felt, how easy it was to be around him when they weren’t arguing or working. It scared her, but at the same time, it intrigued her. “Alright, Neo,” she said, breaking the silence. “I’ll admit it. This isn’t the worst break I’ve ever taken.” Neo’s smile widened, his eyes twinkling with triumph. “I knew I’d win you over eventually.” Anastasia rolled her eyes, but a small smile played at her lips. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. This doesn’t change anything.” Neo leaned forward, his voice softening. “Are you sure about that?” Her breath caught in her throat as their eyes locked. For the first time, she felt the weight of his words—the possibility that maybe, just maybe, things were changing between them. But she wasn’t ready to face it. Not yet. She quickly looked away, her heart pounding in her chest. “We should get back to work.” Neo chuckled, but there was something softer in his laugh this time. “Alright, Anastasia. Back to work.” But as they walked back to the library, Anastasia couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted between them. And this time, it wasn’t just about work.
