The Silver Interrogation

1105 Words
The air inside the Cathedral was thick with the scent of burning sage and something sharper the metallic tang of silver. The high, vaulted ceilings echoed with the rhythmic chanting of the Priestesses, a low hum that seemed to vibrate in my very bones. In the center of the nave, a circular pit of fine silver sand shimmered under the moonlight filtering through the stained-glass windows. This was the sacred ground of the Trial of Truth. Here, lies were more than just sins; they were physical weights that could crush a person’s spirit. "The rules are ancient," High Priestess Selene announced, her voice resonating with an unnatural authority. She stood at the edge of the sand, her white robes flowing like water. "The witness will enter the circle alone. The silver will sense the rhythm of her heart. The smoke will reveal the images of her mind. If she speaks a lie, the silver will burn. If she speaks the truth, she shall walk free." Viktor’s hand squeezed mine one last time before he was forced to step back into the spectator pews. I could feel his gaze on me warm, heavy, and grounding. Across the aisle, Tanya and Silas watched with predatory eyes. Tanya’s lips were curled into a smug smile, her fingers twisting a lace handkerchief. She thought she had already won. I stepped into the circle. The silver sand felt freezing against my bare feet, a biting cold that traveled up my legs and settled in my chest. "Rena Marcello," Selene began, her eyes glowing with a faint, ethereal light. "Do you come here of your own free will?" "I do," I said. My voice was steady, projecting to the furthest corners of the hall. The sand beneath my feet remained still. No heat. No burn. "Is it true," Selene continued, stepping closer as a younger priestess waved a thurible of silver-infused incense around me, "that you were abducted from the Neutral Zone by Viktor Volkov under the threat of death?" The smoke curled around my face, forming strange, ghostly shapes. I saw the night in the forest the rain, the mud, the terrifying silhouette of the Bratva King. But I didn't see a kidnapper. I saw a hand reaching out to pull me from the grave. "It is a lie," I stated. "I was not abducted. I was rescued from the abandonment of my family and the cowardice of my former fiancé." A gasp rippled through the crowd. Silas flinched in his wheelchair, his face reddening with shame. The silver sand glowed with a soft, blue light the sign of absolute truth. Tanya stood up, her mask of concern finally cracking. "Priestess! She is being manipulated! Ask her about the contract! Ask her if she signed it under the influence of Volkov’s Alpha Command!" Selene raised a hand for silence. She leaned in, her gaze piercing mine. "You heard the accusation, Rena. Did Viktor Volkov use the ancient Lycan Command to force your signature upon the blood-oath?" I looked at Viktor. He sat perfectly still, his face an unreadable mask of stone, but his eyes were fixed on mine with a fierce intensity. "Viktor Volkov did not command me," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that felt louder than a scream. "He offered me a choice. For twenty-one years, I was commanded by my father. I was commanded by my sister. I was commanded by the expectations of a pack that hated me. Viktor Volkov was the first man to ask me what I wanted." The smoke around me began to swirl violently, turning a brilliant, blinding white. The silver sand beneath me started to hum, a high-pitched frequency that made the glass in the windows vibrate. "I signed that contract with the blood of my own hand," I continued, my heart rate accelerating not from fear, but from the raw power surging through me. "I signed it because I wanted the power to destroy the people who broke me. I signed it because I love the man who saw a Queen in a girl left to die in the mud." The "White Wolf" spirit within me the dormant tactical genius and the ancient bloodline finally snapped awake. A shockwave of pure, white energy erupted from the circle, knocking the younger priestesses back. My eyes, normally dark, flared with a brilliant, silvery light that rivaled the moon above. The High Priestess fell to her knees, her eyes wide with shock. "The prophecy... the White Wolf has returned." Tanya screamed, a sound of pure terror. "No! It’s a trick! She’s a wolf-less disgrace!" "The silver does not lie, Tanya," I said, stepping out of the circle as the sand turned to liquid light behind me. I walked toward the front pew where my sister sat trembling. I leaned down, my face inches from hers, my glowing eyes pinning her to her seat. "You wanted the truth. The truth is that I am the Sovereign of this underworld, and you are nothing but a memory I am about to erase." I turned to the High Priestess, who was still staring at me in awe. "The Trial is over. My marriage is valid. My power is my own. Does the Commission have any further questions?" Selene bowed her head, her forehead touching the cold stone floor. "None, Your Majesty. The White Wolf has spoken." I walked back to Viktor. He stood up, his face breaking into a look of pure, unadulterated triumph. He didn't say a word; he simply wrapped his arm around my waist and led me toward the exit. As we passed Silas, he reached out a trembling hand, trying to catch the hem of my red velvet dress. "Rena... please... I didn't know... I'll take it all back..." I didn't even look at him. I kept walking, my head held high, the sound of my heels echoing like the drums of a final victory. Behind us, the Cathedral doors slammed shut, sealing the fate of the Marcello name. Outside, the sun was beginning to rise over a city that now belonged to us. "You were magnificent," Viktor whispered as we reached the armored car. He pulled me into a kiss that tasted of victory and silver smoke. "I told you," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder as the car pulled away. "The shadows are where I learned how to hunt. And the hunt is only just beginning."
