Episode 10: Say Something That Matters

1368 Words
The room was quieter than the rest of the building. Not silent— But controlled. Like every sound had to gain permission before it dared to exist. Elena sensed it the moment she walked in. Her awareness sharpened instantly. Too many eyes. Too many people who looked like they knew exactly what they were doing. And then there was her— Standing in a space that felt all wrong. Her heart raced. Once. Twice. Then faster. Don’t hesitate. Adrian’s presence next to her was the only steady thing in the room. Grounding. Unmoving. He didn’t say a word. Didn’t offer guidance. Didn’t explain. He just— Stood there. And somehow, that was worse. Because now it was all on her. Entirely. “Adrian,” someone said, nodding as they took their seats, “You’re late.” “I’m on time,” he replied calmly. Of course he was. Elena swallowed slowly, forcing herself to move forward as others settled around the long glass table. Seven people. All older. All experienced. All staring at her without pretending otherwise. Her chest tightened. Her breathing felt shallow again. Too shallow. She took a seat beside Adrian. Not too close. Not too far. Just the right distance to exist without drawing more attention than she already had. It didn’t work. “She’s new.” The voice came from across the table. Flat. Unimpressed. Elena didn’t look away. “No,” she said evenly. “I’m observant.” There was a brief pause. Then— A low chuckle from someone to her left. “She speaks.” Her jaw tightened slightly. Ignore it. “Let’s begin,” Adrian said. And just like that— Everything shifted. --- The discussion picked up speed. Numbers. Contracts. Terms. Details piled on details. Elena listened. Really listened. Not just to the words— But to the pauses. The tone. The way some people leaned in when something mattered. The way others held back when they were uncertain. This wasn’t just a meeting. It was a game. Power. Control. Positioning. And slowly— The panic in her chest began to morph. Still there. Still sharp. But different now. Focused. Her mind started catching patterns. Gaps. Inconsistencies. A number repeated. A clause brushed aside. A hesitation that didn’t belong. Her fingers tensed against the table. Something’s off. She didn’t speak. Not yet. She kept listening. Because this— This was important. More than anything before. Minutes passed. Or maybe longer. Time felt strange in here. Stretched. Compressed. Unreal. “…the projected return is solid,” one of the men said, sliding a document forward. “We’ve reviewed every angle.” Elena’s eyes darted to it. Brief. Sharp. And then— She saw it. Clear. Obvious. Hidden in plain sight. Her heart raced. Fast. Her chest constricted. Say something. Her throat felt dry. Her fingers curled slightly. Say it. But the room— The people— The weight of it— Pressed down hard. What if you’re wrong? That thought slipped in. Cold. Sharp. Dangerous. Her breath hitched slightly. And then— Adrian shifted beside her. Barely. Just enough. Her attention flicked to him. His gaze wasn’t on her. It was on the table. On the deal. But something about him— Still. Steady. Unmoved. You can. The memory of his voice echoed in her mind. Not loud. Not forceful. Just— Certain. Her chest tightened. Then steadied. Her fingers eased slightly. And before she could stop herself— She spoke. “That number doesn’t add up.” Silence. Immediate. Complete. Seven pairs of eyes swung to her. Her heart hammered. Too hard. Too loud. But she didn’t back down. Didn’t look away. “Explain,” someone said. Sharp. Testing. Elena swallowed once. Then leaned in a bit. Ground yourself. Focus. “The projected return,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside, “is based on a fixed variable that isn’t actually fixed.” A pause. Confusion flickered across a few faces. Good. She kept going. “You’re assuming stability in a market that’s already fluctuating,” she added. “That number only holds if nothing changes.” Another pause. Longer. Heavier. “And it will,” she concluded. Silence. No one spoke. No one moved. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Say something. One of the men leaned forward, brow furrowed. “That’s a stretch.” Elena met his gaze. “It’s a risk.” “Everything is a risk.” “Not everything can be avoided.” A flicker of tension spread across the table. “You’re suggesting we’re missing something?” another voice asked. “I’m saying you’re making too many assumptions.” The words landed clearly. Direct. No hesitation. Her heart raced. But her voice stayed calm. Didn’t shake. Didn’t falter. And that— That changed something. The man across from her leaned back slightly, studying her now. Not dismissive. Not amused. Intrigued. “Then what would you do?” he asked. There it was. The real question. The real test. Elena’s chest tightened. Because now— Now it wasn’t just about pointing out the problem. It was about offering a solution. Her mind moved quickly. Sorting. Connecting. Finding something solid. “You adjust the entry point,” she replied. A beat. “Lower your exposure at the start. Build flexibility into the structure.” She paused briefly. Then added— “Give yourself room to adapt instead of locking into something unchangeable.” Silence again. But different this time. Heavier. More focused. Someone flipped through the document again. Another leaned closer. Re-reading. Re-checking. And slowly— The energy in the room began to shift. Subtly. But it was real. “She’s not wrong,” someone muttered. Another nodded slightly. “I see it.” A pause. Then— “That changes the risk profile.” Elena’s heart stumbled. Because— Because they were listening. Actually listening. The man who’d challenged her earlier leaned back again. But this time— There was no dismissal in his face. Only contemplation. “Well,” he said slowly, “that’s… unexpected.” Her chest tightened. She didn’t respond. Didn’t need to. Because the atmosphere had already transformed. --- Beside her— Adrian hadn’t moved. Not once. Not during her explanation. Not during the silence. Not even now. But his presence— It felt different. Sharper. More focused. On her. And when she glanced at him— Just for a moment— She noticed it. Not approval. Not really. Something quieter. Something deeper. Something that made her heart skip again. --- The meeting went on. But it wasn’t the same. Now— They were looking at her. Not as an outsider. Not as a distraction. But as— Something else. --- When it wrapped up— Chairs shifted. Voices dropped. People stood. But the attention— It lingered. On her. Still. The man from earlier stepped closer. The same one who had pushed her for proof. “Well,” he said, stopping just in front of her. “I didn’t see that coming.” Elena held his gaze. “I didn’t come here to meet expectations.” A slow smile crept across his face. “Clearly.” A pause. Then— “You might actually get through this.” Her heart raced a bit. “Was that ever in doubt?” He chuckled. “Always.” Then he stepped back. And just like that— The test was over. --- Elena exhaled slowly. Her body finally catching up to everything that just happened. Her chest still tight. Her pulse still racing. But now it felt different. Not panic. Not fear. Something stronger. Something steadier. “You didn’t hesitate,” Adrian said from behind her. Her breath caught slightly. She turned to look at him. “I almost did.” “But you didn’t.” A pause. Then— “You were right.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. His gaze held hers. Steady. “And now you know that.” Her heart stuttered. Because— Because that felt like more than just the meeting. More than just that moment. It felt like something entirely different. Something she wasn’t ready to grasp. Not yet.
