Episode 6: Welcome to His World

The contract was still warm in her hand as the weight of it sank into her chest. Too late. It was done. Elena let out a slow breath, but the tension in her body remained. If anything, it intensified—like she was suddenly surrounded by something sharper. More defined. More dangerous. “Follow me.” Adrian didn’t wait for her to respond. Of course he wouldn’t. He turned and strode toward the far end of the office, expecting her to follow. Elena lingered for just a moment. Then she moved. Standing still felt worse. --- His office stretched farther than she had imagined—glass walls, sleek lines, everything too precise, too controlled. Even the silence felt deliberate. As if nothing existed here by chance. Her footsteps echoed softly in the space behind him. She registered it immediately. Too loud. Too noticeable. Stop overthinking. But that was impossible. Everything about this place made her feel like she was being scrutinized. Measured. Found wanting. Adrian halted at a modern door and opened it without glancing back. “Your workspace.” Elena stepped inside— And hesitated. The room was smaller than his office, but still bigger than any place she’d ever worked in. A polished desk sat by the window, a top-of-the-line computer already in place, with files neatly arranged on one side. Ready. For her. Her chest tightened. “You planned this,” she stated. “I plan everything.” Of course he did. Her fingers brushed against the edge of the desk. Smooth. Cold. Unfamiliar. “This doesn’t mean I’ll be here long,” she muttered. “It means you’re here now.” That again. Always bringing her back to reality. Always shattering any illusion of escape. She exhaled slowly. “Fine. So what do you want from me today?” Adrian stepped further into the room, his presence filling the space seamlessly. “Observation,” he replied. Her brows knitted. “That’s it?” “For now.” She crossed her arms slightly. “You pulled me into this just to… watch?” “I hired you to see how you function under pressure.” Her heart raced a bit. “That sounds more like an experiment than a job.” “It’s both.” Her lips pressed together. “You’re not even trying to make this sound normal.” “I don’t need to.” Frustration flared up in her again. “Right. Because everything about this is perfectly normal.” “Normal is irrelevant.” Her chest tightened. God, he was exhausting. Before she could respond— A knock echoed at the door. Sharp. Controlled. Adrian didn’t turn. “Come in.” The door opened. And just like that— The atmosphere shifted. --- She spotted the woman right away. Tall. Impeccably dressed. Perfect posture. Every movement precise, calculated. And her eyes— Locked straight onto Elena. Assessing. Cold. “Well,” the woman said, her voice smooth but edged. “This is new.” Elena straightened instinctively. “I could say the same.” The woman’s gaze swept over her—slow, deliberate. Taking it all in. Judging. Elena felt it weigh on her like a heavy blanket. Uncomfortable. Unwelcome. “Miss Hart,” Adrian said, his tone steady, “this is Victoria Hale.” The name rang with authority. Victoria offered a slight smile. Not friendly. Not warm. Just enough to acknowledge the introduction. “Elena,” she repeated, almost testing how it sounded. Then— A pause. Subtle. But intentional. “Interesting choice.” Elena’s jaw tightened. “I didn’t realize I was chosen.” Victoria’s gaze sharpened a bit. Ah. So that’s how this was going to go. Adrian remained silent. He didn’t intervene. Didn’t step in. He was watching. Naturally. Elena felt it. That same sense of being observed. Tested. Fine. She raised her chin slightly. “Is there something you need?” she asked, her voice steady but firm. Victoria’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “I like to know who’s working here.” “I’m sure you already do.” Another pause. This one tighter. Victoria stepped further into the room, her heels clicking softly against the floor. “I know everyone who matters,” she said. The implication hung in the air. Clear. Sharp. Elena felt a flicker in her chest. But she didn’t let it settle. “Then I guess you’ll need to update your list.” Silence. For a second— Two— Victoria’s gaze hardened. Just slightly. But it was enough. Enough to tell Elena she’d crossed a line. Good. She wasn’t here to back down. Not for anyone. Especially not someone like her. Then— A quiet shift. Adrian moved. Just a single step. But it broke the tension. “Victoria,” he said. Her attention snapped back to him immediately. Controlled. Refined. Like nothing had happened. “Yes?” “I expect cooperation.” Simple. Direct. But something in his tone— Final. Victoria held his gaze a moment longer. Then— A slow nod. “Of course.” But when her eyes returned to Elena— The message was still there. Unchanged. This isn’t over. Elena felt it. Understood it. And didn’t flinch. “Welcome,” Victoria added, her voice smooth again. But it wasn’t welcoming. Not even close. Then she turned and walked out. The door clicked shut behind her. --- Silence filled the room again. But it wasn’t the same kind of silence. This one was heavier. Charged. Elena let out a slow breath she hadn’t noticed she was holding. “Friendly,” she muttered. Adrian’s gaze shifted back to her. “You handled that well.” Her brows lifted slightly. “That was your idea of a test?” “One of them.” Her heart raced again. “Let me guess. There are more?” “Yes.” Of course there were. She shook her head slightly, a small, disbelieving breath escaping her. “This isn’t just about a job, is it?” “No.” The honesty took her by surprise. Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Then what is it about?” A pause. Brief. Measured. Then— “You’ll figure it out.” Her chest tightened again. Frustration. Curiosity. Something else she couldn’t quite pin down. “This is exactly what I meant about control,” she said. “And yet,” he replied calmly, “you’re still here.” That again. Always that. Her jaw clenched slightly. “I’m here because I signed a contract.” “You’re here because you chose to.” Silence. Her heart pounded softly in her ears. Because he wasn’t wrong. Again. Her fingers curled slightly at her sides. “I’m not here to play games,” she said. “Good,” he replied. His gaze held hers. Steady. Focused. “Because neither am I.” The words settled between them. Heavier than they should have been. Elena swallowed slowly, her breath uneven again. This— This was just the beginning. And somehow— She already felt like she was deeper in than she’d anticipated. --- As Adrian turned to leave, his voice broke in one last time. “Be ready at six.” She blinked. “For what?” He paused at the door. Just a moment. Then— “Our first appearance.” Her stomach sank. Her grip tightened. “That’s tonight.” “Yes.” No hesitation. No room for argument. Her heart raced. Fast. Sharp. Too fast. And just like that— The rules weren’t just words on paper anymore. They were real.
