Chapter 7: The Lion's Shadow

845 Words
The morning after the gala, the Silverledge Estate didn't feel like a palace; it felt like a crime scene. Caspian sat in his study, the air thick with the smell of stale scotch and the lingering scent of sandalwood that Elara had left behind. He hadn't slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw those honey-gold eyes staring back at him from a child’s face. His eyes. "The board is in an uproar, Caspian." Elder Thorne slammed a newspaper onto the mahogany desk. The headline of the Financial Lycan was a stinging blow: SOLSTICE GLOBAL ACQUIRES 40% OF BLACKWOOD; MYSTERY PRINCESS REVEALED. "They want blood," Thorne hissed, his eyes narrowed. "You let a woman you exiled walk into our territory and claim our soul. And the boy... if he is yours, he is pack property. By ancient law, an Alpha’s firstborn must be raised within the pack walls." Caspian’s head snapped up, his eyes flashing a dangerous, molten gold. "He is not 'property,' Thorne. And he isn't just a Blackwood. Did you see the light when he touched her? That was the Imperial Spark. If we try to take him by force, we aren't just fighting a rejected mate—we’re declaring war on the Solstice Empire." "Then use your head!" Thorne leaned in, his voice a low venomous crawl. "She was obsessed with you once. She was a 'stray' who lived for your smile. Win her back. Make her fall for the man who broke her, and then we fold her fortune into ours. If you can’t lead her, Caspian, then you’re no Alpha." Caspian felt a surge of disgust. For five years, he had listened to these men. He had let them dictate his heart for the sake of "status." "She doesn't look like a woman who wants a smile, Thorne," Caspian said, his voice hollow. "She looks like a woman who wants a funeral." Across the valley, at the penthouse of the Starlight Hotel, the atmosphere was entirely different. Elara stood by the window, watching the mist roll off the Silverledge mountains. She was dressed in a simple, elegant silk robe, a contrast to the armor-like power suit she had worn the day before. "Mommy, look!" Leo was sitting on the floor, his brow furrowed in deep concentration. Between his small palms, a tiny ball of white-hot light was hovering, spinning slowly. Silas stood over him, his arms crossed, watching the boy with a mixture of pride and caution. "He’s getting stronger, Princess," Silas noted. "The air in the valley... it’s feeding his wolf. This is his ancestral home, whether we like it or not." Elara walked over and knelt beside her son, her heart aching with a mixture of love and fear. "That’s enough for today, Leo. You’ll tire yourself out." The light vanished as Leo looked up, his golden eyes wide. "The man at the party... the one who looked like the ghost in your dream. He was staring at me, Mommy. He smelled like cedar trees. Is he a bad man?" Elara froze. She hadn't expected Leo to pick up on the scent or the connection so quickly. Before she could answer, a chime echoed from the door. Silas moved instantly, his hand on his weapon. He checked the security monitor and stepped back, his expression turning to stone. "It’s him," Silas said. "He’s alone. No guards. Just the Alpha." Elara stood up, her spine turning to steel. She reached for her gold-rimmed glasses and slipped them on, her "CEO" mask clicking back into place. "Take Leo into the other room, Silas. Don't let him out until I say so." She waited until the door clicked shut before she spoke to the room’s intercom. "Let him in," Elara commanded. "Let’s see how much pride the Alpha has left after a night of being bankrupt." As the door slid open, Caspian stood there. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and he looked desperate. But as his eyes met hers, they didn't hold the coldness of five years ago. They held a hunger that Elara recognized instantly. It was the look of a man who had realized too late that he had thrown away the only thing that ever mattered. "Elena," he whispered, stepping into the room. "Princess Elara," she corrected, her voice like ice. "State your business, Alpha. I have a merger to finalize in twenty minutes." Caspian took another step, his scent—that familiar cedar and rain—flooding her senses. "I don't care about the merger. I want to know about the boy. I want to know about us." Elara let out a short, sharp laugh that held no humor. "There is no 'us,' Caspian. There is only a creditor and a debtor. Now, are you here to pay your bills, or are you just here to waste my time?"
