At Lakythra a glittering white marble slab on the largest grey stone rock bears the inscription in Greek capitals, “If I am a poet, I owe it to the air of Greece – Byron.” In Athens, where Byron’s monument stands in the corner of the Zappeion Gardens in direct line with the Parthenon, Hellas crowns him with laurels.
