Death is near

Mateo The fear that Emerald immediately left off after I made my little joke, it was stifling, it was literally permeating the air from her pores. She instantly stiffened up and her bottom lip trembled. Why did she get so scared? “I see you get to call my mate her nickname before I even do.” I said with a smile to lighten the mood. “Yea but I can just call her Emerald, I’m not trying to step on anybody’s toes this early in the morning. Im out.” He puts his two fingers out and walks out the kitchen sensing her awkwardness. I look at Emerald and she is staring at me, hard, not in the eyes of course but watching to see what my next move is. “I was just teasing Cody; I couldn’t get my day started without annoying him this morning.” She just stared. “You, okay?” “Yes, I uh just…uh…I don’t know. I thought I did something bad. Im sorry.” “You have nothing to apologize for. I made a joke, a pretty crappy one at that. That’s my bad.” I paused. “Can I eat with you?” “Of course, its your home.” I grabbed a plate and began to serve myself. She spoke again thankfully; it was getting a little awkward. “I was told you weren’t going to be down for breakfast. Not that I didn’t want you to….come down of course because it is you your kitchen and home and food and…” she was rambling, she was nervous. “Come sit by me,” I patted the seat before she walked to it. I grabbed her unfinished plate and put it in front of her. “I’ve been up since four in the morning, and I got a good amount of work done so I figured I would have breakfast with my beautiful mate.” She looked at me blushing. “Thank you, that’s so sweet of you.” She tried to hide her smile, but I saw it. We ate in silence the whole time. Right when I was going to open my mouth to cut the awkwardness Derek mind linked me. “Alpha they are some rogues circling the borders” “How many?” “I counted eight” “I’m coming” I said standing up so fast that my chair slammed on tiles. Emerald jumped out of her seat with a frightening look on her face. “Im sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you, but I have to go, there’s trouble at the borders.” I turned to leave as she whispered quietly okay. I mind linked Carine to take Emerald up to my room and be prepared to leave to the panic room if necessary. I ran as fast as I could shifting on my way to our borders. The rogues were just pacing back and forth, they weren’t attacking just waiting. They looked ravenous and hungry; they had a crazed look like their eyes. One wrong move and they would attack. I mind linked my warriors not to make any quick movements to startle them and that I would approach them. I shifted back into my human form and walked over the border towards the rogues. My beta, delta and gamma all moved to follow me but I signaled them to stay still. “Leave and there will be no fight, neither side will have to lose a wolf.” I stated in my Alpha voice. A gray rogue shifted back and approached me. “We do not wish to fight, we need to hide…just for the night…some food, water, and shelter…maybe a she wolf or two.” His eyes travel upward, and I follow them and I see Carine and Emerald staring out my bedroom window.im sure they know we are all staring at them because they disappear from the window in a blink of an eye. Instantly my eyes turn black and my hand shoots to grab his throat. I squeeze tight around his throat and his eyes began to water. My warriors are on edge, pacing, waiting for bloodshed. The rogues are snarling and barring their teeth showing their aggressiveness. “You will keep your eyes and hands to yourself. You will receive no shelter or help here rogue.” “Hunters. Close by. Killing,” the rogue struggled to say under my grasp. He needed shelter from hunters. Rogues didn’t deserve my help. Rogues were wolve banished from their packs for betrayal. Unwarranted murders, r***s, and anything else that isn’t justifiable. I would not welcome them here not especially with my timid mate here. “You rogues have made your beds with whatever your wrong doings were in your own packs. You are to spend the rest of lives without the support and security of a pack. You are not welcomed here and will leave now.” I released the rogues throat and turned to walk away. Apparently, he can’t take no for answer because he lunges for as soon as I turn away. I see Derek leap and tackle the rogue, pinning him down by his throat. He opens his jaws, canines extended ready to end his life for attacking his alpha. At the same time another rogue leaps into towards me and I simply catch him by his throat with my bare hands and crushed his windpipe. This rogue was especially matted and smelly. He was too easy to kill, way too easy. “Let him live Derek.” Derek brings his head back away from the rogue’s throat and steps off him. “You will leave, and you won’t return here, or you’ll end up like your friend here.” I say in the calmest tone as I walk towards my pack house. “Take your friend here too,” I say nodding to the dead body on the ground. From the corner of my eyes, I see the rogues backing away into the trees while the rogue I’ve spared drags his fallen friend to the trees while saying he will never forget this. I mind linked my warriors, Cody, and Aaron to hang around the border until the rogues are far from my pack lands. Derek follows me into the pack house so he can find his sister and I can find my mate. I know she must be scared. Emerald My mind has been running a mile a minute. All he said after thirty minutes of brutal silence during breakfast was that he had to leave and that there was trouble going on. At first, I thought he was lying and couldn’t stand another minute alone with me. I knew I wasn’t any fun to be around but then Carine runs into the kitchen looking flustered. Instantly my mood changed , there was something really wrong at the border. “Lu-Emerald we have to go upstairs right now.” “Wh-what’s going on?” My heart was pounding in my chest so hard I swear you could see it from the outside. “Nothing. Alpha sent me to guide you to his room” “Nothing?” I knew it wasn’t nothing. “Come on let’s go,” she said as she grabbed my hand and pulled me out the kitchen. She was walking up the stairs so fast that I was tripping on every step on our way up. “Emerald, come on, we have to go faster” “I’m trying but you’re pulling my hand too tight, it hurts.” She really was. She was pulling the skin on my wrist trying to pull me faster and it was beginning to hurt. “Im sorry but have to make it the alphas room fast, we can’t take our time.” She sounded panicky. She was scared. I quickened up my pace and we made it to the alphas room. The room was large, it looked cozy but neat, it smelled like fresh linen. I looked at the large better and imagined my rather large mate sleeping on it. Then I pictured myself on it with him, curled up in his arms. I was startled by the door of the bedroom door slamming. I watched Carine lock the door and bar it with the dresser. She had sweat dripping down her brows. This wasn’t nothing, something bad was happening. No one pushes a dresser in front of the door if they weren’t expecting an attack. I started to panic. I’ve never experienced anything like this back at home. Our fights always happened away from pack lands. I never seen anyone get attacked or killed. Oh my goddess Mateo! What if he gets hurt or killed? I was getting dizzy. “Woah woah. Emerald. Breathe. Please” Carine ran over to me and pushed me to sit on the bed. “Mateo? Is he- he .…Whats going on Carine?” I struggled to get out between panicked breaths. “Are we being attacked?” “Mateo is okay. He’s going to be okay” “Please.” I begged with tears streaming down my cheeks. “please tell me. Whats going on out there? Hes my mate.” She looked out me with sad eyes and a frown. “I know how you feel Em…my mates out there too…..” she sighed before continuing. “I’m only telling you because I can see youre scared for your mate and I know the feeling too…there were rogues spotted at the border.” “Rogues? Why? Are they going to kill us? Kill Mateo? What should we do?” I was panicking again shooting out questions one after another. “They aren’t going to get to us, Mateo and his warriors would never allow it. And don’t worry about the Alpha, he’s stronger than your average alpha, he can handle himself just fine.” She said with a wink. She led me to the window by my hand and pointed to the group of rogues and our pack members. “See look, no bloodshed, they’re just talking.” Carine said relaxing her shoulders a bit. I looked out the window but all I could really make out was shapes. I wasn’t blessed with vison like yor average wolf. I could get the jest of who was who especially Mateo, he was significantly bigger than everyone else and stood out in the crowd. He looked like a god, he was so large and muscular, he radiated power, he was so damn sexy. My thoughts were interrupted when I heard Carine gasp and snapped out of my thoughts and looked out the window to see Mateo holding a rogue by his throat then being pulled down to crouch under the window. Now we heard growling, snapping, and snarling. Something was happening, they had to be attacking. I turned and rested my back against the small space of wall under the window, I squeezed my eyes shut tightly. I felt a panic attack coming, my breathing was quickening, between all that I could hear was whimpering coming from the wolves outside, someone was hurt, and I could only pray Mateo was okay. Then all of sudden it got quiet. Carine stood up and peak out the window. “They’re leaving, the rogues are leaving, it looks like everyone is okay. Mateo is okay Emerald.” Carine said into between breaths. I felt a sense of relief and I took a deep breath. Thank goddess. I don’t know what I would’ve done if Mateo was hurt or if anyone got hurt. Seeing my own bruises and scars were hard enough to see but seeing my mates, I couldn’t bare the thought. The bedroom door was slammed open causing me to jump out of my thoughts. Carine ran to the door and held Mateos arms as if she was praying to the gods. “Derek? Curtis?” she said with a worried look in her eyes. “They’re both waiting for you downstairs” he said with the sexiest smirk. She glanced back and gave me a smile before running out the room so fast I swear you could see smoke under her feet. I stood up slowly, keeping my gaze low just low enough to realize he had blood on one of his hands. Not realizing I was walking to my mate in quickened pace taking his hands into my arm. “Ar-are you okay? Does it hurt? Let’s get it cleaned up.” I said while examining his hands to see where he wound was. I pulled him towards the bathroom, but my efforts were stopped, and I heard him chuckle. It almost made my knees weak, I looked up at him confused about what was so funny about this situation. “Im not hurt little one. Its not my blood, Em” he said with a smile. Goddess his smile was so sexy, and he called me Em. I smiled shyly not knowing what to say. “Are you okay?” He asked me after a couple seconds of silence. “Yes, im much better now” I said as I tucked my hair behind my ears. I didn’t even realize my hair fell out the ponytail it was in earlier. It probably looked a mess, I felt a mess, I also felt exhausted. This was a lot of excitement for me, s**t these past few days were a lot for me. “Were you worried about me little one?” “Yes,” I whispered so low that anyone that didn’t have a wolf couldn’t hear me but I know he did. “I was scared you were going to get hurt or or…” I couldn’t say the words. “Don’t worry baby you can’t get rid of me that easily.” He said as he cupped my face and placed a small but sensual kiss on my forehead. Then he placed his forehead on mine as if he was trying to transfer his feelings to me. I closed my eyes and copied every second of this moment to memory. Our mesmerizing moment was interrupted by a couple of knocks on the door. “Alpha?” Cody said through the door. Mateo huffed and rolled his eyes and turned to the door. “Yes Cody?” he said as he yanked the door open. “Uhm we have report on the rogues and Alpha Marcus is on the line.” I tensed up hearing that name, it brings back memories of my father and the life I lived under his rule. I always wondered if he was aware and turned a blind eye to my abuse. I shivered thinking about it, all the pain physically and emotionally I went through. As if he sensed my distress Mateo walks over to me and palms the back of my head with one of his large hands. “I have to go but you should stay here and rest, you look like you need a nap. My room is your room, and my bed is yours if you would like to stay here while I handle somethings.” He looked so excited, he was trying to contain it, but I could see it in his eyes and the way he played with my hair. “Okay. I’ll stay.” His grin was so wide the corners of his lips touched the back of his head. I smiled along with him. I couldn’t lie I was excited that he was excited, I was excited that just me in his room made him excited. “Perfect. Ill be back by time you wake up and maybe we eat some dinner on the balcony. What do you think? Sounds good? “Sounds perfect” I blushed. This was so unreal. Stuff like this didn’t happen to me. I felt like I was in a fairytale. One moment death is near and the next I'm blushing from the sweet things my mate says and does. Mateo and Cody turns to leave closing the door behind them. I crawl into Mateo's massive bed and under the blankets, his bed and pillows are perfect just like him. I cant help but think about how I feel so safe in his bed and with that I fall asleep.
