Mateo
Rogues were crossing my damn border, they had to have a death wish. This was the last thing I wanted to deal with especially after the day I had with Emerald. I wanted to finish the day on a good note but thanks to the rogues its ending up the complete f*****g opposite. I had to put those thoughts to the back of my mind and get myself into Alpha mode. I had a pack to lead and keep safe. I mind linked the warriors and my crew, but everyone already knew what they had to do, they knew the protocols. Everyone was up and in high gear. Carine rounded up those who couldn’t fight, the old, children and their moms to go the bunkers. Cody and Aaron ran to the border as soon as they got the mind link and Derek was by my side waiting for me so we can meet with Cody and Aaron. The only thing different from any other attack was my mate. I’ve never had to worry about my mate’s safety until now.
“Little one, we have to get you to the bunkers with the children and women.” She looks stunned by fear, her eyes were wide open, and she was speechless. I grabbed her by her arms and gave her hard shake. She’s probably never experienced a rogue attack back at her old pack.
“Emerald, I need you to shift so we can run to the bunker faster.” I tugged her arms to come on. She was shaking her head frantically with tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
“I cant..I cant… I cant shift.” She blurted.
“Now is not the time to be shy. You have to shift NOW,” I tried using my Alpha tone on her, but she didn’t budge. Her wolf was unphased by my command. Was it because we weren’t officially mated?
“Em, please, its too dangerous right now” I begged. There was no time for this, no time for her scared personality. I needed to get her to safety to I can fight with my pack.
“Alpha, we have to…” Derek began. I cut him off.
“I know. I know. Damn it. f**k it.” I shifted and mind-linked Derek telling him to shift and go to the border to back them up. I turned to face my mate who was trembling from fear. I stepped to her, and she backed away until she hit a wall. I didn’t have time for this. She was being ridiculous. I used my canines to grab the hem of her shirt to drag her. She was crying and begging me to let her go but I knew that wasn’t possible and she knew I couldn’t, I had to get her to safety. I dragged her as hastily and gently as any wolf could. We made it outside before she stopped fighting me, she was still crying but at least I wasn’t dragging her. I nudged her and gestured for her to get on my back, she hesitated but I nudged her till she felt she had no other choice. She finally got on and held onto my fur for dear f*****g life. I started to bolt to the bunker, making a smooth run until I was t boned by a rogue. Emerald flew off first and hard, I stood up fast and ready for a fight against not one but two rogues. I peaked behind me and saw Emerald moving and groaning, I could smell her blood, it wasn’t much that I could tell but I would have to make this fight fast. I turned my focus back to the rogues right before they charged at me. Teeth and claws dug into my fur and skin, from both rogues at the same time, but I was causing more damage to them as I bit, clawed, and swiped at each rogue causing them fall onto each other. They were sloppy, unorganized, and soon to be dead. One bolted at me head on and fast, I thought the other one was going to try and get me from behind, until I heard Emerald scream. I whipped my head back and saw they rogue grab her ankle with his teeth. Pissed and determined, I turned my head back to the rogue in front of me. I hit him hard with my front paw, causing him to stumble and went straight for his throat and ripping it out in one bite. I zipped around to the other rogue who was now on top of Emerald. Why didn’t she shift? She has more of a chance against him if she shifted. I took page out of his book and t-boned him causing us both to tumble over, but it took him longer to get back up. I hopped on his back, claws deep in his skin and my teeth on the back of his neck. He howled in pain, but I bit down harder and pulled, taking a out a chunk of flesh. Once he fell, I towered over him and put my gigantic paw with my claws extended on his throat and pushed with all my weight bearing down, collapsing his windpipe. He let out a small whimper before he took his last rasped breath. This was too easy and I only hoped that my pack was as victorious as I was since I wasn’t there with them.
I shifted before running over to Emerald, she was passed out, she had a small bruise and cut on the right side of her face and her ankle was bleeding where the rogue grabbed her. I picked her up and began jogging to the pack hospital at the same time Derek mind-linked me letting me know that all the rogues were dead, and my pack suffered no casualties. I mind-linked him back.
“We never made it to the bunker, we got attacked halfway there. Emerald is hurt, Im heading to the hospital now”
“ Is it bad?”
“I don’t think so but she’s unconscious, I just want to make sure then I’ll come to you guys”
“Don’t. We got this. Take care of your mate. Ill meet you there when the borders are secured.”
“Thank you Derek.”
I burst into the doors of the hospital causing them to slam against the walls startling the nurses. Her ankle was still bleeding, it should’ve stopped. Why hasn’t it stopped? I couldn’t help but panic. What if the rogue coated his fangs with silver and now it’s in her bloodstream? What if…I was cut off mid thought by the doctor.
“Here Alpha, put her here,” he said pushing a gurney in front of me. I put her down and took a hard look at her,she looked so small, smaller than your average female wolf. I could see her chest moving up and down. At least she was breathing I thought as I let out a harsh breath. I’ve never felt so helpless and scared. I was so confused by her actions.
“I got rammed on my side while she was on my back, she flew off…she may have hit her head Doc. I think the rogue laced his teeth with silver, she isn’t healing, and the bleeding won’t stop,” I said in a panic. The doctor was looking for her over for additional injuries paying close attention to her head checking her pupils with a pen light while a nurse treated my mates wounds starting with the more serious one, her ankle. The nurse flushed the wound on her ankle with some saline allowing us to see the damage that was covered by blood. His teeth punctured her deep and hard. The holes showed no signs of closing yet. My heart was breaking watching this. If that rogue wasn’t dead, I would kill him all over again for touching my mate. He listened to her breathing and felt around her head with his hands. He didn’t seem to be worried with how quiet he was.
“She doesn’t seem to have silver in her system, she isn’t burning up like a wolf usually would when they have been poisoned with silver and her wounds aren’t unusually inflamed.” He said while he took her temperature and then her blood pressure. “Usually, our bodies start rejecting it with a fever, and the wound doesn’t seem like anything other than a flesh wound.”
“So why isn’t she healing? Why is the nurse on her third set gauze trying to clean her ankle? She’s not waking up.” I fired question after question. I was overcome with worry; I didn’t care how pathetic I sounded. My eyes were pinned to the nurse that was taking off the blood drenched gauze and packing new ones on.
“I couldn’t tell you, but she’s stable, she has couple of bruises from the fall but nothing damaging. We’ll take some blood samples just to be sure that there aren’t any traces of silver and do a cat scan.” The nurse begins to wheel my mate to another room to get her cat scan and I start to follow.
“Alpha, you have to stay here, she’ll be fine. I promise.” I held onto the railings of the gurney tightly. I couldn’t get myself to let go.
“We’ll bring your mate back to you safely.” The nurse said as he gave me one last look before I let go and she wheeled Emerald out of my eyesight. I plopped down in a chair and cradled my face in my palms, weakened with fear. A couple minutes pass before Derek runs into the hospital looking disheveled. Making eye contact with him he begins to give me a rundown of the attack.
“No ones hurt Alpha, we piled the rogue’s bodies beyond the borders and set fire to them while a couple of them escaped. It looks it was the same group from the other night. Looks like he came back for revenge but ended up sending to their deaths.”
“Good, that should put some fear in their bones, to see their comrades fall and burn,” I grit through my teeth. “they’ll think twice about attacking my pack now.” My fear and worry were replaced by rage. I felt my blood turning hot and my skin was beginning to burn, it’s been years since I’ve had this feeling. I knew what was happening. I felt the urge to shift, my wolf was right beneath the surface, scratching to come out. This type of urge to shift was different than my others, this was my wolf in full rage, ready to take down whoever and whatever was in his path with no remorse. I felt two hands grabbing me and pulling me into an embrace. It was Derek pulling me into a hug, chest to chest with one hand gripping the back of my neck and the other holding my rib cage.
“Hey bring it in. Don’t lose it.” he said at the side of my face and gripping my neck tighter. “Everything is okay. No one’s dead, no lives were lost Matt. Everyone is okay. Luna’s okay.” I felt my muscles relax a little. “Come on man, take a deep breath.” Doing exactly what he said, I inhaled deeply holding it for a few seconds and let out a woosh of air. He was right everyone was fine; no real damage was done, and no one died. And my little mate was alive. I was just so mad at the disrespect of that rogue coming back and Emerald being the one that got hurt. I have never had this feeling before, it was all so new that my wolf and I didn’t know how to process it.
Letting me go once he felt like I was in control again we stepped away from each other and I sat back down. I was consumed with worry again for my mate.
“how’s Luna doing, is it bad?” he asked lightly.
“The rogue bite her…her ankle and dragged her…why didn’t she just f*****g shift?” I quickly became annoyed.
“She was probably in shock Matt.” He used my nickname; he was talking to me as his friend now not his alpha.
“Shock is what should’ve made her shift in the first f*****g place,” I yelled at my friend. Taking a breath to calm myself. “I’m sorry, I have never felt fear like this in my life, not even while facing two rogues at once. I keep hearing her screams in my head over and over, I keep replaying the moment he sunk his teeth into her ankle watching him drag her and she let him. I was so scared…and angry….shes was behaving so..so…weak.” he just nodded his head letting me getting it all out.
“Shes a young wolf, she’s probably never seen a fight. Her father looked crazy overprotective and clearly kept them far from the pack house. You can’t fault her,” he said in calm tone.
“Sure, overprotective, lets call it that,” I said sarcastically to my best friend “more like possessive.” Derek chuckled at my words. “But still she could’ve gotten hurt worse than the bite or s**t died. Her reaction to an attack was all but reassuring.” I said shaking my head with disappointment. Or conversation was cut short by the doctor walking back into the room.
“Alpha, we’re moving her into a room, if you want to follow me there now” the doctor said while gesturing to the direction of the room where Emerald was in. “Her cat scans look fine but her blood work…” he trailed off, “her blood work was uh….we should wait for her to wake up before we talk about this.” The three of us were walking to her room as he spoke.
“What?! What is it?...is it that bad?” I said in a panic and pulling the doctors arm to face me.
“No, I dont think so at least.” I was starting to freak out, I was losing it. I grabbed the doctor by his white coat and shoved him into a wall. I had lost it. Dereck was behind me, grabbing my arm.
“Matt” Derek pleaded with just my name. I shook his hold on my arm off.
“TELL ME NOW,” I yelled in my Alpha tone.
“Your mate…she isn’t healing..because..well…” he struggle to find the right words. I pulled him forward and slammed him against the wall to knock some sense into him.
“SPEAK. NOW.”
“In her blood…she…she barely had any traces of wolf DNA.”
“What do you mean?”
“She’s a hybrid but unlike most hybrids she has less traces of wolf in her blood…a lot less..DNA…”
“A hybrid?” I whispered. “How? Her parents a both wolves, I could sense it. This doesn’t make any sense.” I was so confused. There had to be a mix up. “Check her again.” I demanded.
“We did. Three times.” The doctor lowered his head.
“This wasn’t possible. She’s my mate. The mate of an Alpha. She has to have a wolf. Right?” I sounded like a little boy in disbelief looking around the room for validation.
“I don’t know, we would have to ask her.” the doctor replied like he was scared.
Oh, I was gonna do a lot more than ask her. I was instantly consumed with rage, my ears turned red, and I know my skin was burning hot with anger. And right on cue the nurse interrupted.
“She’s awake,” the nurse said peaking her head out of the room Emerald was put in.
“Let’s go have a chat with my so-called mate.” I said through clenched teeth.
