Mateo
After about an hour of much needed training with my warriors I was done for. I worked them hard today after that pathetic attempt of an attack from those rogues the other night. I had a feeling it wasn’t over for me and those specific group of mutts, so I wanted to keep my warriors in the best shape. I was dripping sweat and my hair was sticking to my forehead, but I was fine compared to the warriors. They were all laid out flat on the dirt begging for mercy. It made me laugh but it also made me proud because no matter how tired they were they not once gave up. These wolves were exactly who I needed to protect the pack especially their Luna now. I walked over to the cooler to grab and bottle of water, and I get a mind link from Marisol the chef in a panic.
“Al-Alpha. Alpha. OH my goddess, its Emerald, shes- somethings wrong.” She was in such a panic she couldn’t even form her thoughts into words.
“Calm down. What’s wrong Marisol?” I growled through the mind link so she would get to the point.
“It’s the Luna, she isn’t breathing, she just fell out her seat.” What did she mean not breathing? She was breathing perfectly fine an hour ago. I dropped my water bottle and began running to the pack house once I heard the words “not breathing”. I couldn’t keep my thought straight. My emotions were flashing between rage, worry and fear not in any specific order. I mind linked the pack doctor on the way there telling him to meet me in the kitchen not knowing what the problem was. It was better to be safe than sorry. And when it came to my little mate I wasn’t taking the chance. When I arrived, Marisol was holding Emerald’s head and another omega was crouched over at her side. I could see her eyes were swollen shut with pink and red dots around them from where I was standing, I was in shock. I ran over and slide by her side pushing the omega out my way. I listened closely, she was breathing but barely, it sounded like she was struggling, like wheezing.
“Hey Emmie, baby, Em?” I said as I ran my hand over her forehead smoothing her hair back. No response. I gave her shoulder a good squeeze, no response, I was getting scared. She her breathing had gotten shallower and lesser. I mind linked the pack doctor asking where he was and he said he was close. I thought it would be best to tell him her symptoms now before he got her so can prepare himself for treatment.
“Alpha?”
“Hurry Doc”
“I am Alpha. Did she eat anything?” he asked. I thought about the whole reason why she was in the kitchen in the first place. My eyes went to her bowl on the kitchen island and then to Marisol. Did she poison her? Did she give her silver or wolfsbane? She couldn’t, she wouldn’t. Marisol was like family, but my mate was dying, and I didn’t know why.
“What did you give her?” I growled at Marisol.
“Nothing. Nothing. Just the curry you asked me to make her Alpha. I promise. One minute we were talking as I cleaned, and she was eating and then all of a sudden, she stopped responding. I thought she was daydreaming again and by time I turned around she was falling out of the seat.” She looked shaken, she was scared but it didn’t seem for herself she was scared for, she was scared for her soon to be Luna. As I was standing to investigate the bowl, I saw shrimp pieces in it.
“Marisol said she was eating the curry she prepared for her and fell. Now she isn’t breathing Doc. HURRY” I growled through the mind link.
“WHATS TAKING SO LONG?” I yelled to no one. I was panicking and scared. I couldn’t watch my poor little mate suffer or die.
A few seconds later he shows up with a small bottle of liquid, a need and syringe. He began filling the needle with the contents of this little glass bottle. I watched his every move, counting down the seconds. My mate wasn’t going to make it. she was going to die before I could show her how much she meant to me. He injected the needle into her thigh and pushed the liquid in.
“What is that?” I am growling at the doctor. My canines extended causing him to jump back some. I was on the verge of spiraling. I didn’t like seeing my mate like this, I couldn’t take it anymore.
“It’s Adrenaline, Alpha. She’s having an allergic reaction.” He paused to look at the bowl and then to his watch. “It seems like she might be allergic to shrimp”.
“Oh, my goddess. I didn’t know.” Marisol had tears streaming down her face as she stared at Emerald. “I’m so sorry Alpha. I didn’t know, truly.” Her tears calmed me a little, we could fix this.
“I didn’t know either. I didn’t know wolves had allergic reactions to food like this” I felt ashamed for not knowing something so important like this about my own mate. Something that could’ve ended her life. Shouldn’t her wolf have been able to combat the effects of an allergic reaction? Wolves were built like stone walls only weakened by silver and wolfsbane. “Im so sorry little one” I whispered in her ears.
“Look Alpha.” The doctor said as he pulled me out of my inner turmoil. I looked at my little mate and her breathing was beginning to return to normal and her eyes were less swollen, but the hives were still there and as bright. I ran my hand back over her forehead and into her hair again and leaned down to kiss her forehead. It was slightly wet and salty from sweat, but I didn’t care, my mate was alive, and I would do anything to keep her that way.
“Let’s get her to a bed so she can rest while the medicine continues to work. She’s out of the danger zone now.” doc said while cleaning up the needle and syringe. At the same time Derek, Cody, and Aaron ran into the kitchen, tumbling and bumping into one another while they try to assess the situation.
“What happened?”
“We saw the pack doctor run here like there was a fire under his feet.”
“Where’s the Luna” they all spoke at the same time I didn’t know who said what.
“She’s right here” I said as I scooped her delicately in my arms and stood up. I held her like she was broken treasure not wanting to damage it anymore. My nerves were going haywire still because she has not opened her eyes yet or even murmured a sound, but I was keeping it beneath the surface to not cause further worry. “She had a little…mishap but she’s doing better now. She ate something she wasn’t supposed to.”
“Like an allergy?” Aaron questioned.
“Yes” I said flatly.
“How? Wolves…we…I’ve never heard of that” he said back.
“I know…I don’t understand either, but I have to take her upstairs for her to rest. Derek hold the pack down for me until I get her settled into her room. Doc with me, you will stay with her just until we feel she’s in the clear.” I barked orders at my confused pack members as I walked out the kitchen with my mate in my arms. I was just as confused as them, but I didn’t have the emotional capacity to wonder about the how just the safety of my mate. I walked past them and straight up to her room. I laid her softly onto her bed and gave her a small peck on her forehead. I didn’t hear the doctor come in because I was too engulfed with my mate’s scent being so close to her. I wanted to mark her right here and now hoping the mark will give her some of my Alpha strength, but it wasn’t the right moment. I wanted to mark her in a moment filled with love and passion, she deserved nothing more.
Im sure my crew downstairs had questions and I had to assure them that future Luna will be okay. I didn’t want to leave her side, but I had to ease whatever worrying thoughts that would spread.
“I need to head downstairs for a bit. To …uh reassure them about Emerald. Let me know as soon as she wakes up. As soon as she opens her eyes. Okay?” I said with my Alpha tone.
“Yes Alpha. Don’t worry she’ll be okay.” He gave me a curt nod. And with that I left the room.
Emerald
My mind was awake before my body was. I could feel every ache and pain in my muscles. I felt like I got hit by a bus. My thigh was so sore it felt like the time when Thomas kicked me after for asking to go into town to attend the Alphas daughter’s birthday party. I’ve never been to a party, so I thought it was worth a shot to ask him and it backfired. He was so angry with me for even asking him, telling me had I had some nerve to ask as if he wanted people to know about his mate’s betrayal. So, he struck my face first causing me to fall and kicked me while I was down literally and figuratively. I lost a bit of will to live and happiness every time he hit me.
My eyes fluttered open, and I groaned really getting the feel how fatigued and sore I felt. I looked to my side, and I saw a man sitting on the windowsill. I gasped and pulled myself up so fast my head hit the headboard, it hurt way more than it should’ve. I rubbed it and felt a knot that had formed.
“You fell earlier, and you hit your head” the man said as he gestures towards my head. “I’m the pack doctor. The Alpha requested I stay with you while you rested.” He walked over to me slowly, I was on the verge of panicking. There’s no way I just fell out of nowhere and this man is here with me in this room. “You passed out due to an allergic reaction… to the curry, it had shrimp in it,” he said as if he could sense my panic. It was all coming back to me now. One minute I was eating and talking with Marisol in the kitchen the next I was having trouble swallowing the spoonful I had put in my mouth and then that’s it.
“Im allergic to shrimp” I said quietly.
“We know that now Luna. You gave the Alpha quite the scare.” He chuckled.
“I didn’t mean to. I didn’t know she had put shrimp in it. I didn’t think to mention it.”
“Oh, this is a known allergy?” the doctor said with confusion written all over his face.
“Yes, since I was a kid.”
“Wow, this is so interesting. Wolves don’t usually have-” he was cut off by my mate rushing into the bedroom. He looked angry and shocked. s**t, he knows. He knows, wolves don’t have allergic reactions to freaking food, to freaking shrimp. My eyes were starting to pool with tears waiting any second now to tumble over the edge.
“I told you to link me as soon as she woke. Why didn’t you obey?” Mateo said as he stormed over to the doctor looking like he was going to kill him. So, he wasn’t mad at me, he didn’t know, Yet.
“Mateo” I called out to him to grab his attention from the poor man in front of him who was too scared to respond. I spoke a little loudly, my throat was still coarse and dry from the reaction. My body began coughing in reaction to how dry it was. Within a heartbeat Mateo had a cup of water to my lips.
“Here my little one, drink.” His voice was husk and raspy. He titled the cup so I could drink, he stared at me with such admiration as I sipped the water. His blue eyes were so beautiful, he was beautiful. I realized I had gotten lost in the ocean blues when I felt him pull the water cup away from my lips. He told the doctor he may leave if he felt I was in the clear. I didn’t hear a response but saw him leave from behind Mateo so Im guessing, I was.
“How are you feeling baby?” he cooed as he ran his hand through my hair.
“Tired and sore. My leg and head are killing me.” I groaned as I leaned back on the pillow.
“Yeah, you took a hard fall off the stool and the doctor gave a nice fat shot in the thigh.” He gave me a little giggle with a big ole cheesy grin. This day couldn’t get any worse. “Ugh” I huffed and rolled my eyes. “I’m so sorry for all the trouble.”
“Its no biggie but don’t do it again or it might be a problem,” my eyes jumped to his face, he looked so serious. Internally and physically, I tried to shrink myself. “Relax Em, I was kidding. But you did scare me. A lot actually. I thought I was going to lose you before I truly had you.” His hand cupped my face as he lightly rubbed the pad of his thumb over my bottom lip.
“Im so sorry. It won’t happen again”
“You’re damn right it won’t happen again. What other surprises did you forget to mention to me that could be life or death?” I froze at his words, not even a single breath leaving my body. Just one. One really big one I thought. I should take this moment to tell him since he technically asked.
“Well I-I cant…I cant swim.” I blurted out. I mentally face palmed. I couldn’t do it. it wasn’t the right time I convinced myself. He let out a loud and hearty laugh.
“Now I know to keep you away from big open bodies of water without a floaty,” he laughed some more and wiped tears from the corners of his eyes. “But seriously how are you allergic to shrimp or anything at that matter. Wolves don’t really get human sicknesses or diseases.”
“I got it from my father” Another technicality. I did get the allergy from my very human father. I figured he wouldn’t question Thomas’ shifting ability especially after the growling and strength he showed at my old house, so I blamed it on him. “We don’t understand how either. It just happened” I shrugged my shoulders and hoped he would drop it. I yawned and rubbed my eyes to exaggerate how did I was. I mean I really was tired, but I needed to escape this conversation as soon as possible I had nothing further to add to the excuse.
“Hmm, okay then. I’ll let you rest some more. The doctor did say that you would feel extremely fatigued as a side effect of the drugs. Take some rest and we start the day fresh tomorrow. Okay?”
“Okay,” I said as I nestled into the pillows a little more. He kissed my temple and walked to the door and before he left he gave me one last look followed by a wink. I had to tell him and soon before I made matters worse. Maybe he would be understanding. Who am I kidding, alphas need strong Lunas with a wolf to lead the pack and bare alpha pups. Those were all things I couldn’t provide for him. I had to tell him. Tomorrow I will.
