I could not help but laugh. The look in my eyes as I regarded Adrian turned cold and distant. I even thought to myself what a fool I had been, actually considering revealing my hidden truths to him.

"That is not how it was." Adrian's eyes filled with panic. He grabbed my hand. "Iris, that is not what happened. By the time I got to your family's place, those men had already attacked."
He pulled me into his arms, just like five years ago. He pressed his cheek to mine, his voice dropping low, his tone softening. "Iris, I am sorry I was too late. Those men will be brought to justice."
