Chapter Two - The Job

1015 Words
Danielle's POV Five years later "It is so hard to get a job around here." I paused to sigh heavily, I pressed the phone close to my ears to hear what Rita was saying over the phone. Although, Alex's cries made situations worse. He was crying over spilled milk and I had already promised to get him a new one, my promise was not enough to shut him up. "I know right. Things must be tough in Rochester, especially since you are an undergraduate." Rita said, a bit distracted by the noise coming from Alex. "Just get him a new milk." Rita added. I smiled at her, Rita was best friend and the only one from New York that I still kept in touch with. "I need a job Rita. I will handle Alex later." I said in a serious tone. I hope Rita understood the urgency of my tone. Things were slowly becoming tough for I and Alex. As a single mother, juggling several jobs at a time was not easy. The paychecks were peanuts, they could barely cover our welfare. "What about the post as a secretary at Edd's Enterprise? I did tell you to apply and I heard from a friend that they have sent their response to the applicant's emails." Rita said. I had applied but I had not put too much hope in it because Edd Enterprise was located in New York city, even if I did get the job, that would mean that I and Alex would have to move back to New York, my worse nightmare. "I know what you are thinking about Dani, you do not want to return back because of Damien and everything else that you left behind. You have to, for the sake of your son." Rita said. I heard her sigh over the phone. "I have got to go now. Duty calls. Tell me how it goes later." She hangs up. I drop my phone on the couch and avert my gaze to Alex, he had already found something else to munch on. He looked so happy now and I would kill to see my son smile everytime. Rita was right, I needed to do this, not for my sake but for the sake of my son. I reached for my phone and I browsed through the texts on my phone. "Dear Miss Danielle Revine. You have officially passed the virtual interview. Congratulations! You have now being invited to our headquarters in New York city for your physical interview which is scheduled for 8am on Monday. We hope to see you soon, please keep to time." ***************** Who would have ever thought that five years later I would have to return back to New York city, my former home? I paused to gaze at myself in the mirror as I changed into a pair of black fitted palazzo pants and a long sleeved shirt. I looked professional as I packed my hair into a tight bun. I averted my gaze to my five years old son who was already dressed in the school's uniform. This was Alex's first day at a new school, not quite far from Edd's Enterprise. I followed Rita's advice. I and Alex travelled back to New York a few days ago and today was Monday, my interview. Today would decide whether Alex and I were going to stay in New York or not. Thanks to Rita, we were able to rent a small apartment not far from Edd's Enterprise. "Are you ready?" I turned to Alex and asked. He nodded his head enthusiastically and grinned widely. He looked ready for his day, I on the other hand was anxious. We left the house and we were greeted by the neighbours. Everywhere seemed warm and welcoming, I had a feeling that today was going to be a good day. After I dropped Alex at his school, I headed to Edd's Enterprise and I was early for my interview. I met a man named Tom, he introduced himself as the company's president and he said he would conduct the interview. The interview went by fast and I managed to leave an impression on him. He was stunned by my vast knowledge on technology and how easy it was for me to answer questions. "I have to admit Miss Danielle, you have done quite well in the virtual interview and now in the physical interview. I am beyond speechless." Mr Tom said. I could not hold back the joy, a wide grin spread across my face as I bowed my head at him in respect. Judging by looks, Mr Tom and I were most likely of the same age or maybe I was slightly older but I still saw the need to respect him. "Thank you so much Sir, I am glad I was able to leave an impression." I replied, with a small smile plastered on my face. "Actually, there is one last interview you need to pass. That is an interview by the Vice chairman of the company. He is the one who gets the final say here." Mr Tom said, I nodded my head in agreement. There was no problem, if I could impress Mr Tom during the virtual and physical interview. I was confident about impressing the Vice chairman. "Follow me." Tom ordered. I obeyed his instructions and I allowed him lead me to the first door on the fifth floor. Tom delivered a small knock on the door. "Come in." A familiar deep voice yelled. Tom pushed the door open and walked in but I halted in my steps because of the familiarity of the voice. The vice chairman sounded familiar but I could not picture where I had heard his voice before. "Miss Danielle? You may come in." Mr Tom called out. I stepped into the office and my entire body froze the moment my eyes locked gaze with a familiar piercing blue eyes. I gulped a lump down my throat, the hairs on my skin rose as I stared at the father of my child.
