Travis
Travis hangs up his phone and looks at Owen, “I have to go. Now.” “Why? What’s happened?”, Owen asks as he jumps out of his chair. “Peter’s been hurt. I don’t know all the details, but it seems he was attacked by rogues.” “Rogues?! I’m coming with you.” “Owen, you can’t. I need you to keep things running smoothly here until I get back. You’ll have to go to my meeting tomorrow”. Owen nods. “Get me a carload of warriors, anyone willing to tag along with no questions asked. Have them meet me downstairs in thirty minutes”
“Doc, I need to you come with me on a road trip. Gamma Peter has been gravely injured. Please bring as many supplies as you can manage and meet me in thirty minutes. I’m sending an omega to pick you up”, Travis links the pack doctor, Dr. Mitchell. “Yes, Alpha” “Send a car to the doctor’s house right away”, Travis says as he races out of the room.
Inside his suite, Vanessa is naked on his bed, watching TV. “Oh there you are, baby! I’ve been waiting for you”, she purrs, getting up on all fours. “Not now, Vanessa”, Travis answers without looking at her as he goes into the walk in closet. Rifling through his clothes, he yanks some clothes off their hangers. Without warning, he feels hands slide around his waist, one of them sliding down to cup his cr*tch. Travis whirls on her, “I SAID NOT NOW, Vanessa!”, he booms in his alpha voice. Vanessa shrinks back, baring her neck as a sign of submission. “I just miss you”, she pouts. “Peter has been injured on a mission. I need to go bring him home.”
Vanessa c*cks her head at him, “Well, I’m sure another quickie would give you a nice send off”, she takes a step toward him again. Travis feels Shadow rising to the surface with rage, his eyes turn black. He takes a slow step toward her. “You mean to tell me”, another step, “that one of my best friends is gravely injured”, another step, “your pack gamma no less,” another step, “and what you’re worried about right now”, another step, “is getting laid?” Another step. Vanessa is pressed into the corner of the closet, Travis towering over her. He bares his teeth in her face and lets out a low growl. “Get out”, he whispers. “But I-“
“GET OUUUUUT!”, he roars so loud, the packhouse rattles. Vanessa yips and bolts for the door. “We’re finished!”, he calls behind her.
Travis throws his clothes into his suitcase and marches out the door. His mother is running toward him in the hall, wide eyed and breathless. “Travis, the whole packhouse shook! What’s happening?” “Walk with me and I’ll tell you”, he replies in a gravelly voice.
Violet
Inside the house, Violet clears the spot on the couch where she had napped not long ago. “Here!”, she points. Lindsey and Evelyn are dragging Peter on their shoulders. They ease him down onto the couch and cover him up. “Janie is bringing clothes”, Lindsey says to Peter, sitting down on the floor beside him.
“Mom, I -“, Violet begins, and the room begins to spin. Her eyes turn black. She takes a wobbly step forward and collapses into Evelyn’s arms, unconscious.
Unknown POV
“Boss, we were ambushed. Roy is dead and I can barely walk”, a man says on the phone. “I felt her use her strength. She’s mine, now”, the voice on the other end replies.
Evelyn
Evelyn and Muriel carry Violet to the love seat and cover her up. “Mother, what’s happening?”, Evelyn asks in a shaky voice. “I can only surmise that she used all of her strength for Peter”, Muriel whispers, “I think she’ll be alright”.
Muriel turns to face the strangers in her daughter’s living room. “I’ll make some tea”, she announces and leaves the room. Janie enters the house with Peter’s clothes and passes them to Lindsey, “we’ll give you a moment”. Janie looks at the love seat and sees Violet, “Is she alright?” “Mother thinks so”, Evelyn nods and leads Janie to the kitchen.
After the tea is ready and Peter is dressed, everyone takes a seat in the living room. “Tell me, Janie. Why were you at the gym?”, Muriel begins. Janie looks back at Muriel with surprise, “How did you know?” “Violet said there was a new student who smells like oranges”, Muriel answers, then takes a sip of her tea.
Janie leans forward and places her elbows on her knees, cupping her chin with her hands. “This all started a few days ago…”
Muriel
Muriel listens intently to the she-wolf’s story, trying to piece it all together. She looks over at the injured man and his pregnant mate. Surely Daniel hasn’t sent a pregnant she-wolf to harm Violet. She can’t even shift in her condition. Muriel nods to herself, satisfied with her own answer.
“How long until this Alpha Travis arrives? We’re basically sitting ducks the longer we wait here”, she asks. “Evelyn and I need to get moving as soon as Violet wakes up.” “I… I don’t think… I mean, Travis won’t like that. He’s going to want to protect her”, Janie stammers, “You also know that neither of them can fight the mate bond. What’s the hurry, anyway?”
“Like this stranger wants to take on one of the strongest wolves alive!”, Evelyn snorts, “He doesn’t even know her. She’s still a child, anyway”, she huffs. “One of the strongest wolves alive?”, Peter asks, lifting his head, “Ah! F*ck!” He lays his head back down on the pillow and coughs.
Muriel and Evelyn exchange glances. Evelyn looks down at her lap and begins to pull on some imaginary fluff on her pants. “Tell them, Evelyn”, Muriel insists with her eyes narrowed. Evelyn raises her head, tears welling in her eyes as she starts to tell her story.
