As the massive oak doors creaked open, the flickering torches along the stone walls cast an eerie glow over the grand hall, announcing the start of an evening steeped in ancient traditions. The air was thick with the scent of roasted game and savory herbs, a feast prepared under the watchful gaze of the full moon, which hung low and golden in the night sky. Lords and ladies of the Frosthaven Clan, draped in furs and finely woven garments, filled the long wooden tables that stretched across the cavernous room. Their eyes glimmered, reflecting both the flickering light and the wild spirit that ran in their veins, a blend of humanity and something far more primal. Whispered conversations carried stories of hunts, victories, and the shared blood of their lineage, rich with meaning. At the head of the table sat King Jaydon, with a fierce and commanding presence. His dark hair flowed down his back, and a crown of twisted silver glittered atop his head, catching the light just right. He scanned the hall with golden-brown eyes that seemed to sparkle with an inner fire, a reminder of the wolf lurking beneath his skin. With a steady hand, he lifted a goblet crafted from antler, filled with a deep red brew; a mix of blood and rich wine, symbolizing their bond as a clan. In a voice that boomed yet held a warmth, he declared, “Tonight, we gather to honour first: our ancestors, celebrating our strength together under the full moon and, second: to celebrate my daughter Princess Mazekeen who has now entered into womanhood as she has reached the age of twenty, and we all know what that means. It’s time for the Battle of Suitors! My Royal Council will take care of the traditional arrangements as required, the judgement shall be fair and transparent, and whoever the princess shall choose as her soul mate will inherit the crown when I join our ancestors.” His words resonated, shaking the foundations of the hall as cheers erupted with raised goblets clinked together, the sound jubilant and loud. The banquet commenced as platters of succulent meats and fresh bread were served with laughter filling the air. Stories flowed freely, memories were shared, and the night wrapped around them like a warm embrace. Though each tale brought them closer together, reinforcing the ties of kinship and unity; the battle for the throne of Frosthaven had already begun in their minds. As the merriment continued past midnight, Jaydon arose and took the princess by the hand saying “It’s time my love, let’s retire and allow the people continue feasting in your honour.” At this point, the Royal Herald screamed with a loud voice “Hear ye! Hear ye! The King and Princess prepare to depart,” and the guests immediately stood in reverence with heads bowed slightly and hands clasped before them, they stood like statues – and ensemble of grace and loyalty. Even as the Jaydon and Mazekeen walked majestically past, eyes followed them filled with unyielding admiration and respect as if to absorb the very essence of power and authority they embodied. As soon as the King, the Princess, and the royal entourage exited the hall completely, the guests switched back into merriment. This went on until dawn when everyone tried to find their way home, some staggering as they got on their prestigious wagons and carriages due to the abundance of wine in their system. In the cool evening, after the news of the king’s decree concerning the Princess and the throne had saturated the entire Frosthaven, the elite elders of Shadow Pack gathered for a secret meeting led by Lucian, the king’s most trusted adviser, and the pack leader. They chose quite a neutral and unsuspecting location for this as the matter to be discussed was considered most treacherous. “I know you all have risked a lot even agreeing to this in the first place,” Lucian began, “but if we all keep quiet and play along like puppets then we would all be living a big lie.” The room was filled with mixed feelings as tension and confusion led the way in every heart that was in the room. Lucian continued, “Frosthaven is not made up of one man and his kin, no one man has perpetual authority or control over the throne of this land.” “We all have bled and died for this land in our own way, so we also deserve a shot at the throne of Frosthaven.” “King Jaydon alone is not Frosthaven! We are Frosthaven!” Lucian ended his speech with a roar. As the last words of the rebellious decree rang out, a loud cheer erupted from the group, breaking the heavy silence that had filled the room. We are Frosthaven! We are Frosthaven! They all chanted, their voices rising together in an exhilarating chorus, filling every corner of the room with raw and infectious energy. Jacob, Lucian’s second in command cut in, “Why must someone marry his daughter the princess only to inherit the throne when he’s gone? Why can’t he hand over the power of the throne by crowning a worthy and properly deserving leader amongst us so others can also enjoy the benefits of the throne?” Jacob expressed with frustration, “His grandfather followed the traditions of our kingdom, and so did his father before him. Now he thinks he can twist things to fit into his selfish and corrupt agenda? No!” Jacob shouted in anger as he sat down. “After all, Frosthaven is made up of several royal families,” the people began to murmur as Lucian signaled for silence. “I think we have all agreed on something: King Jaydon must hand over the throne to another pack as he currently has no heir apparent. He can’t impose the next king on us.” Lucian said, “Let us all return home and brood on this as we come up with a plan of action, make sure not to speak a word of this to anyone else you shall pay with your life.” No sooner did Lucian end his sentence than the elders dispersed like startled leaves caught in a sudden gust of wind. Some slipped into the shadows, moving stealthily like phantoms weaving through the darkness, while others broke into smaller clusters, exchanging glances that sparkled with a mix of excitement and caution.
