Adrian Blackwood hated surprises.
Especially the kind that walked into his company wearing a simple black dress and carrying a résumé.
He stood behind the glass wall of his office, watching Elena Rose work.
She had been his employee for less than an hour.
Yet somehow, she had already managed to disturb the perfect order of his world.
Nathan entered the office quietly.
“You wanted me, sir?”
Adrian didn't turn around.
“Close the door.”
Nathan did.
Adrian's eyes remained on Elena.
“Pull up everything you have on Elena Rose.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Education?”
“Yes.”
“Employment history?”
“Yes.”
“Family?”
Adrian finally turned.
“Especially family.”
Nathan hesitated.
“Is there a reason?”
Adrian's stare was enough of an answer.
Nathan nodded.
“I'll have it within the hour.”
“Thirty minutes.”
Nathan sighed.
“Of course.”
He left.
Adrian looked back through the glass.
Elena was typing something on her computer.
She stopped.
I looked around.
Then glanced directly toward his office.
Their eyes met through the glass.
Adrian didn't move.
Neither did she.
Elena raised an eyebrow.
Then pointed at herself.
Me?
Adrian simply looked away.
Elena shook her head.
“Strange man.”
She returned to her work.
Adrian heard her voice faintly through the office door.
He almost smiled.
Almost.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message.
CONFIDENTIAL FILE READY.
He opened it.
The first page contained Elena's basic information.
Age: 24.
Education: Bachelor's in Business Administration.
Employment: Three years at a small consulting company.
Father: Daniel Rose.
Mother: Margaret Rose.
Sibling: One younger sister.
Nothing unusual.
Adrian frowned.
He scrolled down.
His eyes stopped.
Mother—Margaret Rose.
He knew that name.
He had heard it twenty years ago.
A memory surfaced.
A dark room.
His father's angry voice.
A woman crying.
And his mother screaming—
“Never mention that woman's name again!”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
He continued reading.
Then he saw something that made his entire body go still.
Margaret Rose — Former employee, Blackwood Holdings.
His fingers stopped moving.
No.
Impossible.
He opened the attached photograph.
A young woman appeared on the screen.
Margaret Rose.
Twenty-five years younger.
Standing beside...
Adrian's father.
Victor Blackwood.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
His breathing became slower.
Why had his father never mentioned her?
Why had his mother hated her?
And most importantly...
Why was her daughter now sitting outside his office?
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
Nathan entered.
“Sir.”
Adrian locked the screen.
“What did you find?”
Nathan placed a folder on the desk.
“There's not much.”
“Then tell me what you found.”
“Daniel Rose has been struggling financially for several years. He runs a small repair business.”
Adrian listened.
“Margaret Rose worked at Blackwood Holdings twenty-five years ago.”
“I know.”
Nathan paused.
“You know?”
Adrian ignored the question.
“What else?”
“She left the company suddenly.”
“Why?”
“We couldn't find a reason.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Couldn't?”
“Her employee file was deleted.”
Silence.
“Deleted?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
Nathan shook his head.
“The system records were wiped.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
Someone had gone to great lengths to erase Elena's mother's history.
That wasn't a coincidence.
“Anything else?”
Nathan hesitated.
“There was one more thing.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“Twenty-five years ago, Victor Blackwood transferred a large amount of money to an account belonging to Margaret Rose.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“How much?”
“Ten million dollars.”
Silence filled the room.
Adrian stared at Nathan.
“Ten million?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“We don't know.”
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
His father's secret had just walked into his company.
And he had personally hired her.
Nathan lowered his voice.
“Should we fire her?”
Adrian's eyes immediately hardened.
“No.”
Nathan looked surprised.
“No?”
“Keep her.”
“For how long?”
Adrian looked through the glass.
Elena was still working.
“Until I know the truth.”
---
Elena looked at the clock.
9:47.
She had been working for almost an hour.
And already, she had discovered three mistakes in the previous assistant's filing system.
She frowned at the screen.
“Who organizes documents like this?”
She moved one folder.
Then another.
A shadow appeared over her desk.
Elena looked up.
Adrian.
She nearly jumped.
“Do you always appear without making a sound?”
“Yes.”
“That's creepy.”
He ignored the comment.
“What's that?”
She turned the screen toward him.
“The Sullivan acquisition files.”
His expression changed.
“How did you get those?”
“They were in my inbox.”
“I didn't authorize you to access them.”
“They were sent to me.”
“By whom?”
Elena looked at the email.
“Your finance department.”
Adrian took the mouse and opened the file.
His eyes scanned the document.
“You found the error.”
“Yes.”
“Anything else?”
Elena nodded.
“The numbers were changed twice.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Twice?”
“Yes. The first change increased projected revenue. The second change altered the expense forecast.”
“Why?”
“To hide the first change.”
He stared at her.
“You noticed that in less than an hour?”
Elena shrugged.
“I told you I'm good at my job.”
Something almost resembling approval appeared in his eyes.
“Good.”
He turned to leave.
Elena called after him.
“Mr. Blackwood.”
He stopped.
“Why did you hire me?”
He slowly turned around.
“I told you.”
“No.”
Elena stood.
“You said I was intelligent. But that's not enough to hire someone as your executive assistant without checking references.”
Adrian's expression became unreadable.
“You ask too many questions.”
“And you give too few answers.”
For several seconds, they stared at each other.
Then Adrian walked toward her.
He stopped directly in front of her desk.
“Perhaps I like your questions.”
Elena's heart skipped.
She immediately looked away.
“Well... that's unfortunate.”
“Why?”
“Because I have a lot of them.”
A faint smile touched the corner of Adrian's mouth.
It disappeared so quickly that Elena wondered if she had imagined it.
Then he leaned slightly toward her.
“Be careful, Elena.”
It was the first time he had called her by her first name.
Something about the sound of it made her pulse quicken.
“Why?”
“Curiosity can be dangerous.”
He walked away.
Elena watched him go.
She whispered,
“Only if you're hiding something.”
---
At noon, Elena received a call.
“Hello?”
“Miss Rose?”
“Yes?”
“This is Daniel from the bank.”
Her heart sank.
She already knew why he was calling.
“Please don't tell me it's about the payment.”
“I'm afraid it is.”
“How much time do I have?”
“Two days.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“I understand.”
“Miss Rose, if you can't pay—”
“I'll pay for it.”
She ended the call before he could finish.
She stared at her hands.
Two days.
She had just started a new job.
Her salary wouldn't even cover a fraction of the debt.
She didn't know what she was going to do.
“Everything okay?”
Elena looked up.
A woman stood beside her desk.
She was elegantly dressed, with a warm smile.
“I'm Isabella. I work in marketing.”
Elena smiled politely.
“Elena.”
“I know.”
Isabella laughed.
“Everyone knows the new assistant.”
“Already?”
“Trust me. People are curious about anyone who survives their first hour with Adrian Blackwood.”
Elena smiled.
“Is he always like that?”
“Worse.”
They both laughed.
For the first time that morning, Elena relaxed.
But neither woman noticed Adrian standing at the end of the hallway.
His eyes moved toward Isabella.
Then back to Elena.
Something inside him tightened.
He didn't understand why.
He had no reason to care who she spoke to.
Yet he disliked seeing her smile at another man.
He turned away before anyone noticed.
---
That evening, Elena was preparing to leave when her computer screen suddenly went black.
She frowned.
“What happened?”
The system restarted.
A message appeared.
YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE COME HERE.
Elena froze.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Another message appeared.
YOUR MOTHER MADE THE SAME MISTAKE.
Her heart stopped.
“My mother?”
She stood abruptly.
She looked around.
The office was almost empty.
“Who is doing this?”
A third message appeared.
ASK ADRIAN WHAT HAPPENED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
The screen went black.
Elena's breathing became shallow.
She didn't know what was happening.
But someone knew her mother.
Someone knew about the past.
And someone was watching her.
She grabbed her phone and hurried toward Adrian's office.
She knocked once.
No answer.
She opened the door.
Adrian stood by the window, his back toward her.
“I need to ask you something.”
He didn't turn.
“About what?”
“My mother.”
His entire body went still.
Elena noticed.
“You know her.”
Adrian slowly turned around.
His expression had changed completely.
“What did you say?”
“My mother's name is Margaret Rose.”
Silence.
Elena stepped closer.
“I received a message.”
Adrian's eyes darkened.
“What message?”
She showed him her phone.
He read it.
His face became colder than she had ever seen.
“Who sent this?”
“I don't know.”
“When did you receive it?”
“Five minutes ago.”
Adrian took the phone from her.
He examined the screen.
Then I looked at her.
“Did anyone see this?”
“No.”
“Did you tell anyone?”
“No.”
He handed the phone back.
“Good.”
Elena frowned.
“Why?”
“Because from this moment, you don't talk about your mother with anyone.”
She stared at him.
“You're scaring me.”
“I should.”
“Why?”
Adrian walked toward her.
He stopped only inches away.
His voice was low.
“Because your mother wasn't just an employee at Blackwood Holdings.”
Elena's heart pounded.
“What was she?”
Adrian's eyes held hers.
“She was involved in something that nearly destroyed my family.”
Elena's face went pale.
“What are you talking about?”
Before Adrian could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
The entire building fell into darkness.
Elena gasped.
Adrian immediately reached for her.
His hand closed firmly around hers.
“Stay behind me.”
“What happened?”
“I don't know.”
A loud crash echoed from the hallway.
Then another.
Someone was inside the building.
Adrian pulled Elena closer.
His voice became dangerously quiet.
“Don't move.”
Elena could hear his heartbeat.
Fast.
Powerful.
For the first time, the ruthless billionaire looked genuinely alarmed.
Then a phone rang somewhere in the darkness.
Not Adrian's.
Not Elena's.
A third phone.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
The ringing stopped.
A message appeared on Elena's phone.
She looked down.
Her blood ran cold.
WELCOME BACK, ELENA ROSE.
And beneath it was one final sentence.
YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU WHO YOUR REAL FATHER WAS.
Elena's breath caught.
She looked at Adrian.
He was already staring at her.
Neither of them spoke.
Because at that moment...
Adrian realized the truth might be far more dangerous than he had imagined.
And Elena realized the family secret she had never known existed...
might be her own.
