“I'd like to retire soon, son, your mother and I would like to enjoy life before we get too old to do so. Ever since we were young we have placed the pack and you above ourselves. But" he said, trailing off, patting my hand on the table. "I was blessed to find my fated mate on my 18th birthday. Of course, I had to wait three years for your mother to know she was my mate, but your mother was here in our pack, so the day I turned 18 and got my wolf, I knew your mom was my mate. The wait was worth it all." He said with a chuckle. "Son, your mate is not here. You would have found her by now. I will not allow you to just pick a chosen mate without first looking for your fated one," he said, double tapping my hand.
“Everyone deserves to have that chance," he said with a small smile. The respect I had for my father grew more than it already had been. My father, Alpha Mack, had always been a respectable alpha full of strength and moral integrity. He lives and leads by a code of good ethics and respect. The kind of leader I have always aspired to be. "One year" he said, breaking me out of my thoughts. "I am going to resume all alpha responsibilities for this next year. I will take the roles and responsibilities of the alpha. All of them!" I opened my mouth to protest, but he continued speaking, " You, my son, will use this next year to find your Luna. I should not have waited so long to ensure you looked for your Luna," he said, sadness touching his eyes.
"You will manage our company in the city and attend the lunar and moon light balls in all the pack territories," he said, his tone not leaving room for any argument. "If, after one year, you do not locate your fated mate, you will find a chosen Luna," he said. A year to either find my mate or choose one I thought about it. This felt like a fair compromise. I am 28 now and have spent the last 10 years of my life growing the pack and territory, ensuring we are the strongest in the United States and helping my dad build the company to ensure our future. My father is getting older now and deserves a chance at a happy retirement and, with him taking over the responsibilities of the pack, this would free up a significant amount of time for me.
There have been some reports of discrepancies in the accounts at the company and possibly fraud. I have not had the chance to dig too far into this since it was brought to me 48 hours ago, so this would be the perfect chance to free up my time to dive into this matter. "Very well I will do it," I said, using my free hand to pat his hand that rested on mine.
My father smiled at me as a knock at the door interrupted us. He leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath. There was no denying the scent. "ahh, your mother is here," he said, the smile on his face growing larger. I have always admired the love they shared. It was a bond that could not be broken. I could only pray to the moon goddess that one day I would find my mate and have the same type of marriage my parents had. "Come on in darling," he yelled. Darlene, My mother, stepped through the door, her sandy blond hair tied in a loose braid down her back, her blue eyes laced with concern, but her demeanor screamed confidence and grace as a Luna should.
She walked to where my father was, leaned down and kissed his cheek. "So what's the verdict?" She asked, placing her hands on his shoulders standing behind the chair. "One year," he said, moving his hands to rest over hers. "Jace will spend this next year looking for his mate, he will run our company in the city and attend to the lunar and moon light balls if after a year he does not find his mate he will select a chosen mate" he said gently squeezing her hands. Mom looked at me, a slight smile playing on her lips. "And are you wholeheartedly agreeing to this, Jace?" She asked. "It seems like a fair trade mom," I said, brushing off the insecurities I felt at only having a year. "I am sure I can find a mate with in a year" I said standing up. "Or at the very least I will find a good Luna for our pack, I am going to pack up now and head to the city," I said, walking to my mom and kissing her cheek.
I patted my father's shoulder and turned to walk out the door. I opened the door and Toney stood there, hand frozen in a knocking position. "Good you are here," I said, clasping my hand around his, pushing it down to his side. "I am going to pack some bags. I am moving to the city tonight. If you would please take my car around, I will drive myself," I grumbled, walking past him. "You are not going anywhere without me," he said, turning and following me. I could not argue with him as it would serve no point. Toney was as stubborn as a mule and would not change his stance. "Very well then," I said, walking up the steps. "Get your bags packed," I said, taking the steps two at a time now.
We went downstairs to start loading the car with our items. My mother and father met me next to the front door. "We are sending Sophie and Matt with you," my mother said with a small smile on her lips. "Sophie will tend to your home and cook for the four of you and Matt will be an extra hand to guard your home," she said hugging me. The tone in her voice told me there was no room to protest as she had made up her mind. Matt and Sophie were both about 10 years older than I am and were mates. Their pups were all grown up now, so traveling was not an issue for them.
I sighed. "Mother, you can not force people to come with me. Their lives are here," I said, looking at my mom. Sophie interjected: "She is not forcing us. We want to go with you, Jace and help in any way we can whether it be cooking, cleaning or watching over you and your home away from home. As a successful business executive, you need extra hands and ours have claws," she said, her wolf eyes glowing through with a smile playing on her lips. She flashed her fangs while showing me her claws. I smiled a little recalling Sophie used to do that to me as a child to make me laugh.
“If this is what you truly want" I said giving up on fighting it I was to tired and there was a 3-hour drive back to the city. When we got everything packed and loaded, we said goodbye to everyone and started the 3-hour drive back to the city with Matt and Sophie following in the car behind us. " Jace" Toney said eyeing me in the mirror. I looked up from my laptop screen where I'd been reviewing reports sent to me by the department managers. "hmm" I said, paying more attention to my screen them him. "Why in the hell are we moving into the city?" he questioned. It occurred to me that I had never explained the situation to him. There had not been time yet. Though as alpha and he as my beta, I never have to explain my reasoning to him, but he is like my brother. I owe him that much. I closed my laptop and took a deep breath, letting it out. Slowly, I began to tell him the events of earlier and what had transpired.
