Chapter 4: A step closer

1113 Words
The days had passed in a blur for Ethan. He’d settled into the rhythm of school, the early mornings, the crowded hallways, and the ever-present buzz of voices. He wasn’t exactly fitting in yet, but he wasn’t standing out in a bad way either. The new kid was still a novelty, but that was starting to wear off. He was walking through the courtyard again, his hands shoved into his pockets, when he saw her again. Ava. She was sitting with her friends, her laughter ringing out, but there was something different today. Something that made Ethan pause for a moment, just watching her. Maybe it was the way the sunlight caught her hair, or how she looked so at ease with the world around her. He couldn’t quite place it, but there was a warmth to her that made him feel like he wanted to know more. He snapped out of his thoughts when someone bumped into him. He turned to see Lily, one of the girls from his class, smiling up at him. “Hey, Ethan! You alright?” she asked, her voice light. “Yeah, I’m good,” Ethan said, offering a small smile. “Just lost in thought, I guess.” Lily grinned. “That’s the new kid for you. Always looking like they’re about to discover something big.” Ethan chuckled. “I don’t know about that.” Lily shrugged. “Well, if you’re ever up for a walk, I know a good spot by the park. It’s quiet, and no one bothers you there.” Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Sounds like a place to think.” “Exactly,” Lily said, nodding. “Sometimes you need a place to clear your head. Anyway, I’ll catch you later.” “Yeah, see you,” Ethan said, watching her walk off. First-Person Perspective (Ethan’s Thoughts) I didn’t expect that. Lily was nice, and it was cool that she offered a spot to clear my head, but it got me thinking about... other things. About Ava, mostly. It’s weird, right? How someone can make you feel so... off balance without even trying. She’s just there, being herself, and suddenly everything around me feels like it’s in motion. But I don’t know. I can’t just keep thinking about it. Third-Person Perspective Later that day, Ethan found himself walking through the halls, trying to keep his mind off the feeling that seemed to be creeping up on him. He didn’t even know why he was thinking about Ava so much. He barely knew her. Yet, it was like something about her pulled him in, making him feel... connected, somehow. As he passed by the lockers, he saw her again, standing by her own locker, fiddling with a notebook. When she noticed him, she smiled, a little shyly. “Hey, Ethan,” she said, her voice light. “Hey, Fiona,” he replied, offering a genuine smile. “How’s it going?” “Good, just trying to get through the day,” she said, laughing softly. “You know how it is.” “Yeah, I do,” Ethan said, his smile widening. There was a brief pause, and then Fiona spoke again, her voice a little softer. “I wanted to thank you again, you know, for earlier. I was so embarrassed, but you just... helped without making it awkward.” Ethan shrugged. “It wasn’t a big deal. You don’t have to thank me.” Fiona smiled, her cheeks pink. “Still, it was nice of you.” Ethan scratched the back of his head, feeling a little awkward. “I’m just glad I could help.” They stood there for a moment, the sound of other students rushing by filling the space between them. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was... nice. “I’ll see you around,” Fiona said, breaking the silence. “Yeah, see you,” Ethan said, watching her walk away before heading to his next class. First-Person Perspective (Ethan’s Thoughts) Fiona’s cool. She’s just a nice person, and I don’t mind helping her out. But it’s funny—after talking to her, I realized I didn’t feel anything more than... well, just that. She’s a classmate. A good one. That’s all. But then there’s Ava. I don’t even know what’s going on with me. It’s not like I’m in love with her or anything. It’s just... she’s different. And I guess that’s what’s making me think about her so much. Third-Person Perspective The next day, as Ethan walked into the cafeteria, he noticed Ava sitting at her usual spot. She was talking with her friends, laughing, but this time, there was something in her eyes that made Ethan hesitate. She didn’t seem to be paying attention to anyone around her, lost in her own world. He sat down at a table by himself, his mind swirling with thoughts he couldn’t quite control. “Hey, Ethan!” Lily’s voice broke through his thoughts as she slid into the seat across from him. “You’re not going to sit alone, are you?” Ethan smiled at her. “I was just thinking.” “About what?” Lily asked, raising an eyebrow. “Just... stuff,” Ethan replied, not wanting to get into it. “You know how it is.” Lily nodded, understanding. “Yeah, I get it. Sometimes you just need a moment to think.” Ethan leaned back in his chair, looking over at Ava for a moment. She was still laughing with her friends, unaware of the way his gaze lingered on her. But then he shook his head, telling himself it didn’t matter. He had his own life to live. Third-Person Perspective (Ava’s Thoughts) Ava was trying not to stare at Ethan, but it was hard not to. She couldn’t help it. He was always so... different from the other guys. There was something about him that made her feel both curious and... something else. He was sitting by himself, and for a moment, she found herself watching him. His posture was relaxed, but there was a quiet strength to him. A masculinity that wasn’t in your face. And then, when he smiled—she could feel her heart skip a beat. Why was he so... shy? It was like, the more he tried to act cool, the more she wanted to know what was going on inside his head. She hated how it made her feel—like she couldn’t quite figure him out. But that was what made him so... sexy. She bit her lip, her heart racing. How could a guy so masculine be so shy? It drove her crazy.
