The days leading up to the Gala were a masterclass in deception. At home, I moved with the quiet grace of a Benedictine nun. I was a ghost in pale linens, my voice soft, my needs nonexistent. Julian, convinced he had successfully reasserted his dominance, treated me with a kind of magnanimous pity. He saw my compliance not as a strategy, but as the natural result of a broken spirit. He believed he had won, that the ugly scene in the laundry room had been the final, necessary correction to my misguided rebellion. He was generous in his victory, occasionally leaving a hundred-dollar bill on the kitchen counter for “groceries” or bestowing a condescending pat on my head as he left for the day.
