POV: The Hybrid Her eyes slowly opened and were clouded, cloudy and glassy, and for an instant, she fixed them on the blurred light of the crystals in the cavern like stars falling too close. And her breath shook, quivered, and trembled, alive yet irregular. Stronger than she had been. Then her eyes shifted. Towards me. Towards the darkness, I pushed in on myself. Every wolf and every vampire and the cursed thing in between in my body went still. I didn’t move. I didn’t breathe. I didn’t blink. Because she wasn’t supposed to wake yet. And she certainly wasn’t supposed to see me. But her eyes sought me out. No, not my shape, not entirely. No, not the darkness that had become like a second skin to me. Something, nonetheless. A flicker. A silhouette. A presence chipped out of darkness
