Morning came slow. The curtains in Adam’s suite had been left half open, and the first gray light of dawn stretched across the tangled sheets. Rachel woke with her head against his chest, listening to the measured rhythm of his breathing. For a moment, she allowed herself to imagine this was her life: waking in silk sheets, in a bed that overlooked the whole city, beside a man who seemed to own it. But reality pushed back quickly.
