Chapter Eight

Waves of Sin The sea spread wide and blue beneath the afternoon sun, waves rolling steady against the sand. Melissa laughed as she kicked off her sandals, racing ahead with the carefree energy that always made Jason smile. He carried the cooler and towels, following more slowly, his gaze drawn against his will to Rachel trailing at his side. She wore a simple sundress over her swimsuit, the breeze tugging at the hem. Her hair shone in the light, golden streaks catching fire with every movement. Jason forced himself to look away, but the scent of salt and her perfume mixed, tightening his chest. Melissa ran straight to the shoreline, squealing as the surf caught her ankles. “Come on!” she called, waving. Jason set down the cooler. “She’s already a kid again,” he said. Rachel smirked, pulling her sunglasses down. “And you’re already distracted.” His jaw tightened. “Don’t start.” “Who said I’m starting?” she teased, lowering herself onto the blanket. “Maybe I’m just pointing out what you can’t hide.” --- Melissa was busy, running in and out of the water, phone raised to capture selfies with the ocean glittering behind her. Jason forced a smile when she pointed the camera his way. Rachel leaned in at the last second, pressing her shoulder against his, flashing a grin so innocent it made his blood burn. Later, Melissa waved from the waves. “I’m going to swim a little further out!” Jason shaded his eyes. “Not too far.” “I’ll be fine!” she called back, splashing into deeper water. The moment she was out of earshot, Rachel lay back on the blanket, her dress sliding up her thighs. She turned her head toward Jason, her voice low. “You keep looking at me like you’re drowning.” Jason sank into the sand beside her, fingers digging in. “Because I am.” Her hand found his, warm and certain. “Then let me drown with you.” The heat between them rose with the tide. Jason hesitated only a moment before leaning over her, his lips crashing onto hers. Rachel gasped, arching beneath him, her arms curling around his shoulders. The blanket shifted, grains of sand clinging to their skin as the kiss deepened, hungry and unrestrained. Her fingers slipped under his shirt, tracing the muscles of his back. Jason groaned into her mouth, his control unraveling. He pressed her down, feeling her body respond with equal urgency. Rachel broke the kiss for air, her voice shaking. “Out here—what if she sees—” “She’s too far,” Jason whispered, already kissing her again, stealing the doubt from her lips. The roar of the ocean swallowed the sound of their breathing, the crash of waves their shield. --- Jason’s hands roamed over her curves, sliding beneath the thin fabric of her dress. Rachel shivered, biting back a moan as his mouth trailed down her throat. The sun blazed overhead, but it was nothing compared to the fire that consumed them both. “Jason,” she gasped, her nails clutching his shoulders. His lips brushed her ear. “We shouldn’t—” “But we are,” she interrupted, pulling him closer, her legs tangling with his. The kiss that followed was rough, desperate, as though they had both accepted the ruin waiting for them. --- Melissa’s voice suddenly carried faint across the water: “Jason! Rachel!” They froze, hearts pounding. Jason scrambled upright, adjusting his shirt, brushing sand from his arms. Rachel pulled her dress back into place, breathless, her cheeks flushed with both heat and guilt. Jason stared toward the waves, where Melissa was swimming back, oblivious. Rachel leaned close, her whisper fierce. “This won’t stop. You know it.” Jason’s chest ached with the truth. He grabbed the cooler, forcing his voice steady. “Just… act normal.” Melissa waved as she reached the shallows, smiling wide. “You two didn’t even dip your toes in?” Jason managed a laugh. “We were keeping watch.” Rachel only smirked, her eyes promising that the sea wasn’t done with them. Melissa spread out on the blanket, toweling her hair, cheeks pink from the swim. She leaned back with a sigh. “Perfect day, isn’t it?” Jason forced a smile, his pulse still hammering. “Yeah. Perfect.” Rachel lay beside her sister, eyes hidden by her sunglasses, lips still swollen from kisses Melissa could never imagine. She tucked a strand of wet hair behind her ear, her expression calm, but her toes brushed lightly against Jason’s ankle beneath the sand. He stiffened, glancing at her, but she didn’t move. The contact was small, secret, electric. Melissa chattered on about the neighbors, about a recipe she wanted to try. Jason nodded at the right times, his throat dry, his skin burning from a heat that had nothing to do with the sun. Rachel listened silently, a faint smile playing on her lips, as if the words didn’t belong to her world anymore. --- Later, Melissa dozed under the umbrella, hat tilted over her eyes. Her breathing deepened into the rhythm of sleep. Jason sat on the edge of the blanket, staring at the horizon. The waves glittered like shards of glass, endless and merciless. He buried his hands in the sand, trying to ground himself. Rachel rose quietly and moved toward the rocks at the far end of the beach. She glanced back once, a subtle tilt of her head, inviting. Jason hesitated, then followed, every step dragging him deeper into the current he couldn’t escape. The rocks hid them from view, the sound of the surf louder here, a wall of noise that promised cover. Rachel leaned against the stone, arms folded, watching him with eyes that burned. “You came,” she said softly. Jason swallowed hard. “I shouldn’t have.” “But you did.” She stepped closer, until her body brushed his. “And you will again.” --- He kissed her before he could think. It was raw, urgent, the kind of kiss that tasted of salt and inevitability. Rachel clung to him, her hands sliding under his shirt, nails grazing his skin. Jason pressed her back against the rock, his body pinning hers, the world narrowing to heat and breath and desperate need. Her gasp was lost to the crash of the waves. Jason’s lips trailed along her throat, his hands greedy, memorizing the shape of her. She arched against him, whispering his name like a prayer and a curse. “I can’t—” he groaned, pulling back just enough to see her face, flushed and wet with sea spray. “You can,” she insisted, dragging him back into the kiss. “And you want to.” --- Minutes blurred into heat and touch. They kissed until Jason’s lips ached, until his hands shook with the effort of holding back. Rachel trembled, caught between guilt and abandon, but every time she tried to stop, she pulled him closer instead. Finally, Jason buried his face against her shoulder, voice breaking. “We’ve gone too far. We’re breaking everything.” Rachel’s arms wrapped around his neck, holding him tight. “Then let it break,” she whispered fiercely. “I’d rather shatter with you than stay whole without you.” His chest heaved with the weight of her words. He kissed her once more, slow and desperate, before pulling away. --- They stood panting, pressed against the rocks, the roar of the ocean covering the sound of their hearts. Jason forced his hands to drop, stepping back as if distance could save him. Rachel’s eyes were bright with tears. “You’ll come back to me,” she said. “Even if you hate yourself for it.” Jason shook his head, though his body betrayed him with every breath. “I already do.” --- Melissa’s voice rang faint across the sand. “Jason? Rachel? Where are you?” They jerked apart, panic snapping through them. Jason raked a hand through his hair, trying to steady his breathing. Rachel pulled her dress straight, wiping at her mouth quickly. “Coming!” Jason shouted, his voice cracking. He grabbed Rachel’s hand without thinking, then dropped it instantly, shame burning him. They walked back together, careful, composed. Melissa waved when she saw them, smiling with complete trust. “I thought you disappeared!” Jason forced a chuckle. “Just checking out the rocks.” Rachel settled beside her sister again, her face serene, hiding the storm inside her. But when Melissa turned to rummage in the cooler, Rachel met Jason’s eyes over the rim of her sunglasses. Her look said everything: This isn’t over. Jason stared back, guilt crushing him, desire pulling harder. The ocean roared, endless, as if mocking the fragile lines they kept pretending existed.
