CHAPTER TWO

She was grateful for the timely save. "Thank you, Mr…" Camila trailed off, leaving a space for him to fill. "I am Jaxon. Jaxon Hayes," he said smoothly, his confidence perfectly matching the assured stride with which he approached. The mention of his name made Camila pause, her curiosity piqued. His dark eyes carried a spark of mystery, a pull that drew her in like a moth to a flame. His hair was dark, impeccably styled, and framed a face that radiated effortless sophistication and power. "You mean… Jaxon Hayes? The owner of this club and the Eclipse Lounge?" she asked, a note of disbelief in her voice. "Yeah," he replied with a half-smile, extending a hand. "Nice to meet you, Camila, right?" "Yes," she confirmed, shaking his hand firmly. "Camila Rodriguez." Her mind raced at the implications of this encounter. He had introduced himself simply as the owner of Club Ecstasy and the Eclipse Lounge but there was more. Much more. Camila knew well enough that he was also the Alpha of the Nightshade pack, the shadowy force that controlled this side of the city. One that directly rivaled Dalton’s Silvercrest pack. The subtle omission of that detail only added a shiver of intrigue to the meeting. The realization layered their interaction with unexpected complexity. What exactly was he doing here? And why had he sought her out? "Do you mind some company?" Jaxon asked, his voice smooth, inviting, and impossibly controlled. "Of course not," Camila replied, smiling warmly as she gestured to the seat beside her. She carefully masked the whirlwind of thoughts running through her mind, refusing to let her surprise or curiosity show too plainly. As Jaxon settled in, he gestured subtly to the bartender for another round, his eyes never leaving hers a silent invitation to continue their conversation. "So… how did you know my name?" Camila asked, curiosity lacing her tone, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass. Jaxon’s gaze lingered on her, a spark of admiration glinting in his piercing blue eyes. "It’s been a while since I’ve heard someone sing like that," he said smoothly. "You’ve got a remarkable voice." A faint blush warmed Camila’s cheeks, and she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Oh… thank you," she murmured, caught off guard by the intensity in his look. Jaxon gave a small, knowing nod, his calm composure only adding to the enigmatic aura surrounding him. "I haven’t seen you around before. Are you new to this part of town?" "Yes," Camila replied, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I just moved here… trying something new." She felt a flutter of ease in his presence, as though the world outside the club had faded to silence. He raised his glass with a casual elegance, his eyes locking with hers. "Then we should toast," he said, voice low and inviting. "To new friendships." Camila mirrored his movement, their glasses meeting with a soft clink that seemed to echo just for them. "To new friendships," she replied with a warm smile. They clinked glasses. “So…” Camila swirled her drink lightly. “Do you come here often?” Jaxon took a slow sip, eyes never leaving hers. “Only when I want to be entertained.” Her eyebrow arched. “Oh? And am I entertaining enough?” A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “You have no idea.” She laughed softly. “That sounds suspiciously confident.” “I don’t deal in suspicions,” he replied. “I deal in certainty.” “Is that so?” She leaned an elbow on the bar, angling toward him. “And what are you certain about?” “That I didn’t expect to meet someone like you tonight.” “Someone like me?” she pressed. “Confident.” His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. “Captivating.” A beat. “And a little dangerous.” “Dangerous?” She took a slow sip, deliberately making him wait. “That’s a bold assumption.” “I make bold assumptions.” “And you’re always right?” “Almost always.” She tilted her head. “That must be exhausting. Being right all the time.” “It’s a burden,” he said dryly. “But I manage.” Camila laughed, the sound warm and unguarded. “You still haven’t explained this ‘dangerous’ theory of yours.” “You walked onto that stage like you owned the room.” “I was just doing my job.” “No,” he said, voice lower now. “You were commanding it.” She held his gaze. “And that makes me dangerous?” “It makes you the kind of woman men underestimate.” His fingers traced the rim of his glass. “And regret underestimating.” “Should I be flattered,” she asked softly, “or warned?” “That depends.” “On?” “Whether you plan on proving me right.” She leaned closer, close enough for him to catch the faint sweetness of her perfume. “And what if I am exactly as dangerous as you say?” His eyes darkened slightly. “Then I’ll have to find out.” “Find out what?” “How far it goes.” A slow smile curved her lips. “You sound like a man who enjoys risk.” “I enjoy results.” “And what result are you hoping for tonight?” she challenged. He didn’t hesitate. “Another drink with you.” “That’s all?” “For now.” “For now?” she echoed. He lifted his glass again. “I prefer to let things unfold naturally.” Camila studied him for a moment, then clinked her glass lightly against his. “Careful,” she murmured. “You might discover I’m more than you bargained for.” His grin returned, unshaken. “I’m counting on it.” their conversation without drowning it. The bass thudded softly beneath the laughter of distant patrons, the lights dimmed to a seductive amber glow. “So, Camila…” Jaxon leaned back slightly in his seat, studying her over the rim of his glass. “…are you as good of a dancer as you are a singer?” One brow lifted with deliberate slowness, challenge flickering in his dark eyes — not arrogant, but intrigued. Testing. Camila tilted her head, pretending to consider the question. A slow smile curved her lips as she set her glass down. “That,” she replied smoothly, her voice carrying the same velvet tone she used on stage, “depends entirely on who’s leading.” Her gaze held his steady, unafraid. The corner of Jaxon’s mouth twitched. He rose without breaking eye contact and extended his hand toward her. “Then allow me to prove I’m worth the risk.” He offered his hand not casually, but with the quiet authority of a man used to being obeyed. Camila hesitated for half a second. Just enough to remind herself she didn’t belong to anyone anymore. Then she placed her hand in his. He led her away from the brighter lights into a darker edge of the dance floor where shadows clung to the walls and the music pulsed deeper, heavier. The bass vibrated through the floor, through her heels, into her bloodstream. His hand settled at her waist. Not loose. Not tentative. Claiming. She felt the heat of his palm through the thin fabric of her dress as he drew her closer. Her breath caught not in fear, but in awareness. Jaxon didn’t move like other men. Every step was deliberate. Every shift of his body carried intention. They began to sway. At first, slow. Measured. Then the rhythm shifted, and so did he. His thigh brushed hers. His chest pressed closer. The scent of him dark, expensive cologne layered over something more primal wrapped around her senses. It wasn’t just a fragrance. It was presence. “You’re tense,” he murmured near her ear. “Am I?” she whispered back, though her pulse betrayed her. His fingers tightened slightly at her waist. “You don’t trust easily.” Her eyes lifted to his. “Should I?” The corner of his mouth tilted. “Not yet.” The music thickened around them, but it felt distant as if the room had narrowed to the space between their bodies. His hand slid subtly along the curve of her hip as he turned her, guiding her back into him. Her spine brushed his chest. She felt the strength there. The control. And she liked that she could feel it. When she turned back to face him, they were closer than before. Too close to pretend it was only dancing. Her fingers rested against his shoulders, steady but unafraid. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips not rushed, not greedy. Assessing. A silent question. Camila didn’t step back. That was all the permission he needed. He closed the distance slowly, giving her time to retreat. She didn’t.
