Chapter 43: We Have a Phone?“Are we really going to live here?” I said, hanging my coat near the door and looking around. “This is home, baby,” Jackson said with a smile. “It’s so big.” “You’ll get used to it.” It was hard to think of Number 504 Pine Street as an “apartment.” I had lived in apartments. This was not an apartment. It was like a shotgun house with three floors, itself just a small slice of a huge building that ran down the entire block. We had neighbors on either side, but nothing of them could be heard through the thick walls. “I can’t imagine myself living here,” I admitted. “Give it time.” “At least they turned the heat on.” “Mom had all the utilities turned back on for us—water, gas, electricity, the phone, the whole nine yards.” “We have a phone?” “Of course.”
