Chapter 44: Mommie DearestI woke to the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Since the apartment was nicely warmed, I wandered down the carpeted stairs in my underwear. In the kitchen I found Jackson putting away groceries. “Put some clothes on,” he said right away, making a shooing gesture with his hands. “Why?” “Just go!” I frowned. At that moment, the front door opened and Mrs. Ledbetter strode in, letting in a blast of cold air. “Making yourself at home, are you?” she called across the large living room. “Don’t mind Mommie Dearest. I went out this morning and bought groceries. Fortunately Jackson was already up, and he helped me carry them inside, but I forgot my reading glasses. Don’t mind me. I was going to have a decaf coffee with my Jackie and read the newspaper. Carry on, dear.”
