ELEVEN The courtroom of Judge D. Wilson Kaine occupied the fifth floor of the Multnomah County Courthouse. Maple panels colored in rose and burnt autumn hung majestically on the wall of the courtroom. The sounds of footsteps reverberated on the marble floor outside the courtroom like parishioners engaging devout piety. A court bailiff, a large man wearing a Kevlar jacket bearing the insignia and letters of the Multnomah County Sheriff Office opened the large doors to permit the spectators and litigants to enter the room after a court recess.
