Chapter 4 Enter Selena

1555 Words
Aria shoved her textbooks into her bag, the cafeteria chatter fading behind her as she adjusted her schedule in her head. Lectures, part-time shift at the café, then a long walk through the park to clear her head… it had been her routine for months. Routine was comfort, safety, predictability. But ever since the encounter in the forest, nothing had felt predictable anymore. The three men, Kael, Rowan, and Dante, had insisted on staying close, even at school and work. They claimed it was for her safety, but their constant presence gnawed at her nerves. In class, she felt their gazes burning through her, a weight that made focusing nearly impossible. At the café, her hands shook slightly as she refilled coffee cups and served pastries, knowing one of them could appear at any moment, silently observing. She hated it. She hated the cage of their attention, the invisible leash the bond seemed to have placed on her. And yet… part of her couldn’t deny the strange comfort it brought. The warmth in her chest whenever one of them was near was intoxicating, frustrating, and terrifying. Kael, as always, was the first to act. At school, he lingered near the entrance of the lecture hall, arms crossed, eyes scanning the hallway with a predator’s precision. Rowan took a subtler approach, blending into the crowd, quiet and observant, ensuring no one got too close without her noticing. Dante, of course, had the most theatrical method, leaning casually against the wall, a teasing grin plastered across his face whenever she looked up. During lunch, Aria stormed into the empty courtyard behind the science building. “Why do you have to follow me everywhere?” she demanded, her voice sharp, tinged with the frustration that had been simmering for days. Kael’s jaw tightened, lips pressed into a firm line. “Because it’s not safe,” he said, voice low, commanding. “The forest, the pack… even the territory isn’t as secure as you think.” “I’m not a child,” she snapped, crossing her arms. “I have a life. I have school. I have work. You can’t…” Dante’s laugh cut her off. “You’re adorable when you’re mad.” He circled her casually, close enough to make her pulse spike. “But stubborn, too. That’s why we’re keeping an eye on you. You might survive on your own… maybe. But not without a lot of trouble.” Rowan stepped between them briefly, his calm presence almost soothing. “Kael’s methods are harsh, Dante’s are reckless, but they’re both right in their own way. You need to understand the stakes before you act recklessly.” Aria groaned, running a hand through her hair. She hated being stuck in this limbo… caught between fear, attraction, and frustration. She wanted answers, but the three men remained silent on the bond’s full implications. Her phone buzzed, reminding her of her part-time shift. She tried to leave, but Kael’s hand brushed lightly against her arm. “Not yet,” he said. Storm-gray eyes locking onto hers. “We need to talk first.” “You can’t…” she began, but the words caught in her throat under the weight of his gaze. “I said not yet,” Kael repeated, his wolf instincts evident in the firmness of his tone. Rowan placed a hand on Kael’s shoulder, a subtle attempt to mediate, but even he didn’t look completely at ease. Dante’s grin widened, mischievous, eyes glinting with the kind of amusement that made her nerves tighten. Frustrated beyond reason, Aria tore herself away and dashed toward the café, ignoring the protests and glances from the three men. Work offered a brief reprieve, though even there, she felt the subtle pull of their presence tugging at her senses. Every time she turned, half-expecting to see one of them watching, her chest tightened. The bond was alive, thrumming, insistent, a constant reminder that her life had shifted irrevocably. Hours later, as the sun dipped toward the horizon, Aria returned to the estate. Her apartment, or what she called hers, was quiet, a small sanctuary, yet the air felt tense the moment she stepped inside. A new presence lingered, one that made the temperature in the room drop slightly. Selena Ravencroft. Aria barely had time to register the name before the woman stepped fully into view. Tall, elegant, and impossibly poised, Selena moved with a confidence that radiated dominance without a single word. Her sharp eyes were icy, calculating, and the curve of her lips carried a smirk that made Aria’s stomach twist. The Luna-to-be. Political, ruthless, and already notorious within the pack for her manipulations and cunning. Selena’s gaze swept over Aria as if she were examining a puzzle she already knew the solution to. “So,” she said smoothly, voice cool and deliberate, “this is the girl the Alphas have been hiding?” Kael stepped in front of Aria immediately, his jaw tight, eyes narrowed. “She is under our protection. You have no authority here.” Selena’s smile widened slightly, dangerous in its subtlety. “Protection? Or possession?” she asked, eyes flicking to the three men behind her. “There’s a difference, Kael.” Rowan’s posture remained calm, analytical. “Selena,” he said evenly, “we’re not looking for confrontation. There’s no reason to escalate unnecessarily.” Dante’s grin remained, though tighter now, dangerous. “Escalation seems inevitable when you start pointing fingers,” he said. “And I’d advise caution.” Aria’s pulse pounded in her ears. Her bond surged at the sight of Selena, a strange warning that made her hair stand on end. She felt the heat of the three men behind her, each of them radiating protection and tension in equal measure. Their conflicting energies clashed around her, making her head spin. Selena leaned closer to Aria, eyes sharp and cold. “Do you know what it means to be a mate?” she asked softly, almost mockingly. “Because if you don’t… you’ll learn quickly. And you’ll realize just how little choice you actually have in this world.” Aria’s stomach tightened. She swallowed, trying to maintain composure, but the warning in Selena’s tone made her chest constrict. The three men stiffened instantly, instincts flaring, protective and possessive all at once. Kael’s storm-gray eyes darkened. “She is under our care. This conversation is over.” Selena’s smirk didn’t waver. “Care,” she said softly, “or control? There’s a fine line between the two, and one of us will cross it eventually.” Aria’s heart raced. The three men flinched slightly, a subtle display of tension that even she could sense. Kael’s dominance flared, Dante’s teasing darkened into sharp intensity, and Rowan’s calm composure strained under the pressure. The room felt too small for the five of us to stand in. For a moment, she witnessed something she hadn’t before: a minor act of violence between the Alphas. Kael’s hand brushed against Dante’s shoulder with more force than necessary, a silent claim, a warning, and a spark of tension that could ignite at any second. Aria’s chest tightened further. The bond reacted instinctively, warmth spreading through her body, the connection between them all pulsing with energy she didn’t yet understand. Selena leaned back, observing with detached satisfaction. “Interesting,” she murmured. “So fragile, so volatile. A girl, and three wolves, and yet even a whisper of doubt shakes them. How… charming.” Aria could feel the threat beneath her skin, the pull of the bond reacting violently. Her pulse flared, blood humming with energy she could not contain. The warmth was intoxicating and frightening, a reminder that her power and the connection she shared with the three Alphas was far from ordinary. And Selena was dangerous. Not just to her, but to the delicate balance the Alphas were struggling to maintain. Later, as the three men began to retreat, giving Aria a semblance of space, she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. But the encounter had left its mark. Fear, curiosity, and confusion twisted in her chest. Trust was fragile, and every glance, every step, every subtle movement of the Alphas reminded her how little control she truly had. Aria didn’t notice Selena slipping through the shadows, moving closer, unseen but ever-present. Finally, after a restless night, Aria tried to gather her thoughts. The bond pulsed like a living thing, responding to her emotions, her fears, her desires. She felt the pull toward Kael, toward Dante, toward Rowan… each in a different way, but the weight of the connection was overwhelming. And then, just when she thought she could breathe, a shadow fell across her room. Selena’s presence filled the space, sharp and deliberate. Her voice was low, controlled, but laced with menace. “You are far more important than you realize, Aria,” she said softly, tilting her head, eyes glinting with cold calculation. “And I will not let anyone… or anything… stand in the way of what I claim. Not you, not the Alphas, not this territory. Nothing.” Aria’s breath caught. The threat was subtle, veiled in words, yet clear in intent. Selena would stop at nothing. Just then, she heard something in her head. “To the clearing… now.”
