Chapter Two

1135 Words
The morning after I discovered their betrayal, I woke up filled with pain and anger. Sunlight pierced through the curtains, mocking me with its brightness. My body ached, my mind screamed, and yet… something inside me was different. The girl who had cried herself to sleep last night was gone. In her place stood a woman who would not bend, not break, not beg. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My eyes were red, my cheeks puffy, but there was fire in them now. I could feel it, coursing through me like molten steel. Eric thought he had destroyed me. He thought a week before the wedding, a glance between him and Lila, would be enough to ruin me. He was wrong. I had to make him see his folly. I had to make him regret every touch, every lie, every whispered promise he’d broken. And I had a plan. I opened my laptop and began researching Alexander King, Eric’s father. The man’s reputation preceded him. Billionaire. CEO. Mafia lord. A widower. Dangerous. Ruthless. In other words, the perfect instrument of revenge. As I read, my pulse quickened. Seducing him would not be easy. Alexander King was no ordinary man. He commanded respect with a glance, fear with a whisper, and desire with an effortless charm. But maybe that’s what made him the perfect target. If I could capture his attention, if I could make him… care, then Eric would feel powerless, humiliated, and desperate. I leaned back in my chair, letting the thought settle in my mind. Every move I would make had to be calculated. Every glance, every word, every touch would be a step toward dismantling Eric’s life. And yet, even as the plan formed in my mind, a small, unexpected thrill stirred in my chest. Part of me hated myself for it, but I couldn’t deny it. Alexander King represented everything I should fear and everything I desired at the same time. I shook my head, trying to let out the thought. Desire was dangerous. Obsession was dangerous. But revenge… revenge was a necessity. The next step was preparation. I had to look perfect, irresistible, untouchable. I spent hours in front of the mirror, trying on outfits, adjusting my hair, testing expressions. I needed to appear confident, in control, untouchable, yet tantalizingly just out of reach. I wanted Alexander King to notice me not for who I was now, but for what I could become in his world. By evening, I was ready. I chose a sleek black dress that hugged my curves without revealing too much, paired with heels that added a dangerous elegance to my posture. My hair fell in soft waves over my shoulders, and my makeup was flawless, sharp around the eyes, soft on the lips. I looked like a woman who knew exactly what she wanted and exactly how to get it. The gala Alexander was hosting that night was the perfect opportunity. It would have high profile guests, champagne, whispered deals in shadowed corners… and him, at the center of it all, like a dark sun pulling everything toward him. As I arrived, the lights and music wrapped around me, the chatter of the elite blending into a distant hum. I felt a thrill of nerves because I had never moved in these circles before. But I reminded myself that this wasn’t about me. This was about him. About Eric. About revenge. And then I saw Alexander King. He was talking to a group of men in tailored suits, laughter cutting through the room like a blade. His presence demanded attention without even trying. I felt it before I even looked at him. It was magnetic, almost suffocating. Every instinct in my body screamed that I should run, that I was stepping into a world I couldn’t control. But I didn’t run. I moved closer, letting my eyes take in the perfection, the sharp jawline, the dark hair streaked with silver at the temples, the cold, calculating eyes that missed nothing. I reminded myself that he was a tool, a weapon. My revenge would wield him. I approached the bar, pretending to examine the selection of champagne. My pulse raced as I felt his gaze on me before I even turned. “Unusual choice for tonight,” a deep voice said behind me, low and smooth. I turned slowly, meeting his eyes. Alexander King. Closer than I expected. Closer than I wanted. He studied me, his gaze sharp, measuring, piercing. “I… like champagne,” I said, keeping my tone casual, hiding the tremor in my hands. He chuckled, a sound that made my stomach tighten in ways I didn’t want to admit. “Most people don’t come here just for champagne. They come for… other pleasures.” I held his gaze, refusing to flinch. “I’m not most people.” He raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Are you sure about that?” Something in the way he said it sent a shiver down my spine. Not fear. Not yet. Something else like a challenge. I smiled faintly, my lips curling into mischief I hadn’t felt in years. “Then I guess you’ll have to find out.” His eyes darkened, and for a moment, the room seemed to shrink until it was just the two of us. The heat between us was dangerous and intoxicating. I reminded myself again that this was not about desire. This was about revenge. I lingered just long enough to let him notice me, then drifted away, blending into the crowd. My heart hammered, and I had to bite back a gasp. This was it the first step. He had seen me. He knew I existed. But I also knew something else. Alexander King was not a man who could be easily manipulated. He would challenge me, test me, maybe even turn the tables on me. That thought thrilled me almost as much as it scared me. As the night went on, I moved through the gala with precision. I laughed when needed, smiled when appropriate, and let my eyes wander toward him, letting him catch the glimmer of attention without giving anything away. Every move was deliberate, every glance a subtle provocation. By the time the gala ended, I had made it clear that I was not someone to be ignored. Walking back to my car, I felt the weight of what I was about to do. This was no longer a game. The stakes were higher than I had imagined. Alexander King was dangerous. He was untouchable. But I was determined. I would play this game, and I would win. Because Eric had taken everything from me. And now, it was my turn to take everything from him.
