Chapter 4: The Hidden Village
The forest grew darker as the sun slipped behind the mountains. Ancient trees towered above Princess Amara and Kato, their branches forming a thick canopy that swallowed the last rays of daylight.
Neither of them spoke.
The only sounds were the rustling of leaves beneath their feet and the distant cries of birds returning to their nests.
Amara's legs ached from hours of walking, but she refused to complain. She had already learned that survival demanded strength, not comfort.
Kato suddenly raised his hand.
"Stop."
Amara froze.
"What is it?"
Instead of answering, Kato knelt beside the path. He brushed aside a few leaves, revealing fresh hoofprints in the soft earth.
"They're still following us."
Amara's heart pounded.
"Malric's soldiers?"
Kato nodded.
"And they're getting closer."
He stood and looked toward the western ridge.
"We'll have to take another route."
Several miles away, Captain Vargos, commander of Malric's royal guards, studied a map spread across a fallen tree.
"We've searched every road," one soldier reported.
"No sign of the princess."
Vargos clenched his jaw.
"Then she's hiding in the forest."
A scout rode into the camp.
"We found evidence near the river. Two people are traveling together."
"A man and a woman?"
"Yes, Captain."
Vargos smiled coldly.
"Spread out. Search every cave, every village, every mountain trail."
He drew his sword.
"Lord Malric wants the princess dead before the people discover she's alive."
Night had fully fallen when Kato finally stopped before a towering cliff covered in vines.
Amara looked around in confusion.
"There's nothing here."
Kato smiled slightly.
"Look again."
He pushed aside the thick vines, revealing a narrow opening hidden within the rock.
"A cave?"
"A passage."
He lit a torch and stepped inside.
Though hesitant, Amara followed.
The tunnel twisted deep into the mountain. The walls were covered with ancient carvings of lions, eagles, and crowned kings.
"Who built this place?" she asked.
"My ancestors."
"You've been here before?"
Kato remained silent.
His silence told her everything.
After several minutes, the tunnel opened into a breathtaking valley hidden between towering mountains.
Amara gasped.
An entire village lay before her.
Small stone houses lined neat pathways. Children laughed as they chased one another through the fields. Farmers harvested crops while blacksmiths hammered glowing iron.
It was peaceful.
Safe.
"How is this possible?" Amara whispered.
"No one knows this valley exists," Kato replied.
"It has remained hidden for generations."
As they entered the village, several people greeted Kato warmly.
"You're back!"
"We were worried!"
An elderly woman embraced him tightly.
"You disappeared for days."
"I had important business," Kato replied.
The woman's eyes shifted to Amara.
"And who is this beautiful young lady?"
Amara lowered her gaze.
"My name is Mara."
The woman smiled kindly.
"Welcome, child."
For the first time since the fall of Aderia, Amara felt warmth instead of fear.
That evening, the villagers gathered around a large fire for dinner.
Fresh bread, roasted meat, vegetables, and fruit filled the wooden tables.
Amara hesitated before eating.
The sight reminded her of the royal feasts she once shared with her family.
She suddenly lost her appetite.
Kato noticed.
"You're thinking about them."
She nodded.
"I keep wondering..."
She swallowed hard.
"What if my mother is still alive?"
Kato looked into the fire.
"If she's alive, you'll find her."
"And if she isn't?"
He answered quietly.
"Then honor her by living."
His words brought unexpected comfort.
Later that night, Kato led Amara to a small wooden house where she could rest.
As she prepared to sleep, she noticed an old painting hanging on the wall.
It showed a young warrior standing beside King Ezeon.
She frowned.
"That's..."
"My father," Kato said from the doorway.
"And beside him..."
"...is your father."
Amara stared at him in shock.
"You knew?"
Kato stepped into the room.
"I suspected from the moment I saw your pendant."
He pointed toward the lion necklace.
"Only the royal family wears that symbol."
Amara instinctively covered it.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
"Because the moment people know you're Princess Amara, every assassin in Aderia will come looking for you."
She slowly relaxed.
"You've been protecting me all this time."
Kato nodded.
"I made a promise years ago."
"What promise?"
"My father once swore loyalty to King Ezeon."
He looked away.
"And I intend to keep that oath."
Meanwhile...
Far beyond the hidden valley, inside the occupied royal palace...
Lord Malric stood before the throne, furious.
Weeks of searching had produced nothing.
"How can one girl disappear?" he roared.
No one answered.
A hooded messenger entered the throne room and knelt.
"My king..."
"Speak."
"We've discovered something."
Malric leaned forward.
"A traveler matching the princess's description has been seen with a warrior named Kato."
The name froze the room.
Malric's face darkened.
"Kato..."
He remembered that name.
Years ago, a loyal general had escaped the kingdom with his young son after refusing to join Malric's conspiracy.
That son...
Was still alive.
Malric slowly smiled.
"So..."
"The cub has found the wolf."
He turned toward Captain Vargos.
"Prepare one thousand soldiers."
The captain's eyes widened.
"For one village?"
Malric's smile became terrifying.
"I don't intend to attack a village."
He looked toward the mountains.
"I intend to erase it from history."
Far away, unaware of the approaching storm, Princess Amara looked up at the stars from outside her small cottage.
For the first time since the fall of Aderia, she felt hope.
She had no idea that an army was already marching toward the only safe place she had left.
