Chapter 8: The Fall of the Monastery The monastery bells rang through the mountains. Once they had called monks to prayer. Now they warned of war. Princess Amara tightened her grip on the ancient Chronicle as she stood beside Kato at the entrance to the hidden passage. The echoes of marching soldiers grew louder with every heartbeat. Master Oran stood at the monastery gate, his weathered hands resting on an old wooden staff. "You must leave now," he said calmly. Amara shook her head. "I'm not leaving you." The old monk smiled. "My child, there is a difference between courage and foolishness." Kato stepped forward. "We can still fight." Master Oran looked toward the mountain trail, where hundreds of black-armored soldiers were climbing the steep slope. "No." "There are too many." He turned to Amara and placed both hands on her shoulders. "One day, you will become the queen your father believed you could be." "But today..." "You must survive." Reluctantly, Amara nodded. With tears in her eyes, she followed Kato into the hidden staircase beneath the monastery. As the stone door slowly closed behind them, she heard Master Oran whisper one final prayer. "May the light of truth never die." Outside, Captain Vargos reached the monastery gates. The old monk stood alone. "Where is the princess?" Vargos demanded. Master Oran smiled peacefully. "I answer only to the true King." Vargos frowned. "There is no king." "There is only a thief sitting on a stolen throne." The soldiers gasped. Vargos' face burned with rage. "Search the monastery!" Dozens of soldiers stormed inside, overturning tables, breaking shelves, and scattering ancient scrolls across the stone floor. Minutes later, a captain returned. "The monastery is empty." Vargos stared at Master Oran. "You helped them escape." The old monk remained silent. Vargos drew his sword. "You have one last chance." "Where did they go?" Master Oran slowly raised his eyes to the sky. "The truth..." "...can never be killed." With a roar of anger, Vargos struck. The old monk fell to the ground. His final breath escaped with a peaceful smile. Deep beneath the monastery, Amara suddenly stopped walking. She felt it. A sharp pain in her heart. Tears welled in her eyes. "He's gone," she whispered. Kato lowered his head. Neither of them needed to say another word. The silence told the truth. The underground tunnel stretched for miles beneath the mountains. Ancient torches lined the walls, revealing faded carvings of lions and wolves standing side by side. Amara traced one of the carvings with her fingertips. "They really ruled together." Kato nodded. "Our ancestors protected each other." She sighed. "And now we're running for our lives." Kato looked at her. "For now." Hours later, they emerged into a vast canyon filled with towering cliffs and roaring waterfalls. The air smelled fresh. For the first time in days, there were no signs of soldiers. Amara sat beside the river, exhausted. "I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this." Kato handed her a piece of bread. "You've already come farther than most people ever could." She smiled faintly. "You always know what to say." "My father didn't." She looked at him curiously. "He was terrible with words." "But he believed actions spoke louder." Amara laughed softly. It was the first genuine laugh she had shared since the fall of the kingdom. Kato smiled. "I was beginning to think you'd forgotten how." Far away, inside the royal palace, Lord Malric stood before a large map of Aderia. Captain Vargos knelt before him. "The monastery has been destroyed." "And the princess?" "She escaped." Malric's expression darkened. "Again." He slammed his fist onto the table. "I am tired of hearing that word." Just then, another messenger rushed into the throne room. "My lord!" "What now?" "Our spies have uncovered something." The messenger unrolled an old map. "There is a fortress in the eastern highlands." Malric narrowed his eyes. "The Fortress of Arkan?" The messenger nodded. "It was once commanded by General Darian." Kato's father. Malric smiled slowly. "If the princess seeks allies..." "...that is exactly where she will go." He turned to Captain Vargos. "Ride ahead." "This time..." "I want them alive." Meanwhile, Amara and Kato continued through the canyon until they reached the ruins of an old stone bridge. Half of it had collapsed into the rushing river below. Kato examined the broken structure. "We'll have to cross carefully." As Amara stepped onto the bridge, the ancient stones groaned beneath her feet. She froze. "Kato..." Before he could answer— CRACK! A section of the bridge gave way. Amara screamed as the stones collapsed beneath her. She reached for the edge— But missed. She plunged toward the raging river below. "AMARA!" Kato shouted. Without hesitation, he leaped after her. The roaring river swallowed them both. High above the canyon, hidden among the rocks, a cloaked rider watched the scene unfold. He lowered his hood, revealing a scar across one eye. "So..." "The princess has survived another day." He smiled coldly. "But not for much longer."
