It’s killing me. It’s been killing me ever since we walked in those doors. Every man’s eyes in the room have been locked on Delilah ever since she stepped in. I don’t know whether to thank Chloe or to kill her for picking out that dress. I know Delilah didn’t. She hates being the center of attention. Unfortunately for her, she was the spotlight tonight.
Why am I so jealous? I barely know this girl. She annoys me more than any person I’ve ever encountered, but I hate to be away from her. I hate to see other men look at her or touch her. I want to ask her to dance, but I’m not sure she’ll say yes.
“Dr. Dawson, would you like to dance?” asked Sergeant James, interrupting my thoughts.
Delilah got up so eagerly and never even looked back at me. The Lieutenant General and other officials keep asking me questions wanting to discuss business, but I can’t keep my eyes away from the couple on the dance floor. His hand is way too low on her back. I can’t believe she is letting him hold her that close. I can feel my face growing hot. I just wish this song would end. Delilah is too naive to understand another man’s intentions. She thinks everyone is good natured and honest. I’ve known Sergeant James long enough to know the rumors of his various indiscretions back on shore are true. He is no gentleman. He sure is putting on a show for Delilah though.
Finally, that song ended. Wow, he kissed her hand. He’s really pulling out the big guns isn’t he?
Tobias started to push out his chair, but stopped when he saw who was walking out on the dance floor toward his date.
You’ve gotta be kidding me. That moron Lee now has her wrapped in his arms. I thought Sergeant James was holding her close. Lee is about to suffocate her. If he leans forward to whisper in her ear one more time, I’ll kill him. Delilah has always seemed so fond of Lee, but he is far too much of a flirt for Delilah to be interested in him. Delilah keeps smiling. Why is she smiling so much?
“Uh, General Matthews,” asked Dr. Aldridge “are you okay?” He was looking at Tobias’ hand which had gripped the silver fork in hand so hard that it was bent.
Tobias’ quickly set the fork down, “Uh, yes. Sorry. Please excuse me for a moment, gentlemen.”
Tobias made his way towards Lee and Delilah on the dance floor. Delilah was laughing at some joke Lee had made. Tobias cleared his throat to get their attention. Both Lee and Delilah looked up. Delilah had her usual innocent smile, while Lee looked a bit annoyed.
“Excuse me Lee, mind if I have a dance with my date?” asked Tobias.
