Daphne's POV
“Oh, please stop it” Irene waved her hands at me as she shoved the necessary items I was going to need into a bag. “There is no way Lorenzo would know you are the one. It has been three years already, and besides, whoever you are going to work for is entirely different from him”.
I let out a whiff of air, hoping that it was going to be just fine. In three years, I had done so well for myself. From starting a little business which I had never expected to blossom to sitting over a lot more which ran into millions.
With lips pouted, I threw a salted gaze over my head at Irene. “Don't tell me that you are thinking of dropping this job?” Her eyes dimmed at me. I could tell that she was thinking of various ways to send me out right away if I was. Force me there, if it had to get to that.
“Nope, I am not. I am not going to miss it for anything in the world” It was one of the biggest events that I was going to host in years and if I let this spiral out of my hands, I was going to be wretched. I could just about kiss my career goodbye because it would go down the drain.
“ So, go on and do your thing. I will be waiting for you with the kids'' she cajoled me on. I wanted to rebuff, but I knew that I couldn't do that. I didn't have an iota of strength in me to make that happen right away.
“ That would be my call” The van I was taking along with me horn so loud that I had to run out after kissing her a goodbye.
“ Phone, check, guest link, check. The DJ, check, caterers, check, what else? Oh….the necessary lighting equipment check. You can breathe now Daphne” I uttered to myself, commending myself for a job well done.
The sound of my phone blazed through the air, as I placed it to my ear. “ Yes, what is wrong? Are you done with it already?” My heart couldn't stop the menacing race it was on.
Churning on and on, while slamming so hard against its rib cage that I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes. “ Yes, we are waiting for you to assess everything and make sure that it is perfect”
“ Coming”
I counted down the minutes to the huge event hall which would cost hundreds of millions just to get. I was supposed to be curious about whomever it was that was spending so much money on a mere event hall, but come off it, this was Brooklyn and everyone knew how most people spend money like they didn't work so hard to get it.
“ Take in the rest, I will meet you inside” The trainers I had on aided my movement as I raced in as quickly as I could. A hand held my arm before I could move an inch.
“ You must be the event owner, come here”
My eyes twitched as I wondered what it was about when someone whispered that the bride to be was coming out. Okay, that had to be it.
“ You are late,” she spat out. My eyes ran to the watch gracing my wrist and the time didn't mention that I was late, so what exactly was she on about?
“If I am right, the stipulated time I was given is still far away, so I am not late” I bit into my lips. I wasn't supposed to say that, what if she left a bad review?
Her hands clenched her blue gown, her eyes flustered told me she was pissed, but she sauntered away, her shoulders hitting mine before walking away.
“ He is here. Your fiancée is here”
“ s**t” I let out a string of curses. I hadn't had the luxury to sweep a gaze around, the time was still far ahead, what exactly was happening?
A breath of relief escaped my lungs when I stepped out and everything looked perfect and nice until I saw the groom-to-be and my heart plummeted so fast that I thought I would drop dead.
Running a hand across my face, I hoped that it was just a figment of my imagination because it had to be when his eyes met eyes. Those eyes, the same color as the sea, were hooked on mine for quite some time, and something hot pooled in between my legs. Who knew that he still had such power over me?
“ Ma'am, you are here” my secretary leaned by my side. Grinning from ear to ear as she stared at me. “The groom is so hot,” she whispered into my ears. Her eyes held so much admiration that I could have mistaken it for lust.
“ I have heard so much about him but seeing him here is something else. His presence is felt immediately as he steps into a room, and he is…”
“ Lorenzo” I swallowed, stretching my hands to take a champagne flute from one of the waiters who were holding the tray.
“You know him?”
Downing the flute in a gulp, I wondered how exactly I was supposed to forget him. He was the man who haunted my dreams, the father of my kids, the one whom I had a one-night stand with, and my whole life had taken a new turn.
I forced a smile on my face. “He is pretty popular, his face is all over the magazines, so I would have”
She bobbed her head. “ That should be it, everything is perfect, I am sure they will give you a good review, and you will be all over the New York Times pretty soon”
I let out a scoff, before excusing myself to the restroom, where I leaned both hands against the mirror, trying to gather back my ruffled thoughts.
“ Keep it in, Daphne. Keep it in, just some more hours and you will be fine. You can leave then” I tried to cajole myself.
Flipping off the rushing faucet, I dabbed my hands on the soft tissue by the side, spinning around on my feet to walk away when I stopped in my steps.
“ Lore…” the rest of the words got stuck in my mouth. I had attempted to walk past when he held me back, pinning me against the wall.
My eyes flew up in fury.“ What do you think you are doing?” Anyone would be able to see us and I didn't want his fiancée barging in on us.
“Where were you? I searched all over for you for years, but you knew how to hide pretty well. Where exactly have you been, Daphne?”
He had called my name, he had whispered it to me even when we were alone and hair crept on my delicate skin when I realized how close his face was.
He inched even closer to me, his hands sticking to the side of my body, and I hated how soft I had turned when he was here with me.
“ You have gotten the wrong person, it must be just a wrong resemblance”
Getting a grip on myself, I pushed him off, attempting to walk away when he held me back. A cocky smile graced that devilish handsome face of his. One that I wished that I could wipe off.
“Don't tell me that you are going to act as though you don't know me. I know you, Daphne. Every inch of your body. I will never forget how you moaned my name and now that I know you are back, I will do everything to keep you to myself"
