Chapter 7 – Cracks in the Armor

776 Words
The storm finally broke the next day. Rain hammered the windows of Crestwood, the sky bruised with gray. Inside, the corridors buzzed with restless energy, students ducking into classrooms to escape the weather. Emma had grown used to the whispers. Or maybe she was just numb. Either way, she held her head higher now. Every glare, every mocking comment—she let it slide off her like raindrops on glass. But deep down, she worried about Finn. He’d been quieter than usual since the confrontation with Ryan. She hadn’t seen him in the cafeteria, and he hadn’t shown up in the library either. It wasn’t until the final period that she spotted him, slouched in the back of the classroom, headphones in, gaze fixed on the rain outside. Something in her chest pulled her toward him. After class, she approached. “Hey,” she said softly. He didn’t move at first, then slowly tugged out an earbud. “Sinclair.” “You disappeared.” “Didn’t feel like dealing with people.” His voice was flat, but his eyes flickered. Emma hesitated. “Do you want to talk about it?” He let out a humorless laugh. “Talking doesn’t change anything.” “Maybe not,” she said gently. “But it helps.” For a long moment, he didn’t answer. Then, to her surprise, he stood. “Come on.” --- He led her outside, to the edge of the athletic field where the rain had turned the grass into slick mud. They found shelter under the bleachers, the sound of the storm pounding above them. Finn leaned against the cold metal, arms crossed. For once, he looked… tired. “You want to know why people talk,” he said quietly. “Why Ryan never shuts up about me.” Emma stayed silent, afraid one wrong word would make him retreat again. “There was a fight last year,” Finn said finally. His jaw tightened, eyes fixed on the rain. “A bad one. Some guy wouldn’t leave my friend alone. I lost control. He ended up in the hospital.” Emma’s breath caught. “I didn’t mean to hurt him that bad,” Finn continued, voice low. “But intent doesn’t matter. Everyone saw me as the monster after that. The rumors just… grew.” “Finn…” Emma whispered. He looked at her then, eyes raw, unguarded. “That’s why I said you should stay away. Because they’re right about me. I don’t always know when to stop.” Emma’s chest ached. She should’ve been afraid, but she wasn’t. Instead, all she saw was a boy who carried his scars like chains. “You’re not a monster,” she said firmly. “You made a mistake. That doesn’t define you.” His lips curved into a bitter smile. “You say that now.” Before Emma could respond, a shout cut through the rain. “Hey! Watch out!” Emma turned just in time to see a soccer ball skidding across the wet grass toward her. She stumbled back, but her foot slipped on the slick ground. Her notebook flew from her hands as she toppled— Strong arms caught her before she hit the mud. Emma gasped, finding herself pressed against Finn’s chest, his jacket damp, his heartbeat rapid under her cheek. “You okay?” he asked, voice tight. She nodded, breathless. “Y-yeah. Thanks.” For a moment, they didn’t move. The world around them blurred into rain and thunder, and all Emma could feel was the warmth of his hands steadying her, the closeness that sent her pulse racing. Then, slowly, he set her back on her feet. “You really shouldn’t be around me,” he murmured. “I’ll just keep pulling you into trouble.” Emma looked up at him, rain dripping from the bleachers above, streaking down his face. “Maybe I don’t care about the trouble,” she whispered. His eyes softened, storm breaking just for a second. Then he shook his head, stepping back. “You’re impossible.” “Maybe,” she said, a small smile tugging at her lips. “But I meant what I said. I’m not leaving.” For a moment, he just stared at her, caught between pushing her away and pulling her closer. Then, with a sigh, he ran a hand through his wet hair. “Sinclair,” he muttered, almost like a warning. But there was no real resistance in his voice anymore. And Emma knew, as the rain fell around them, that she was beginning to slip past his armor—piece by fragile piece.
