Chapter 5 – Rumors and Rebellion

806 Words
By Monday morning, Emma felt the shift. It started the moment she walked into the classroom—side glances, whispers that cut off the second she looked their way. Lily slid into the seat beside her, expression tight. “What’s going on?” Emma whispered. Lily hesitated, chewing her lip. “Emma… people saw you with Finn. After school. In the rain.” Emma blinked. “So?” “So now they’re talking,” Lily said softly. “You know how Crestwood is. Rumors spread faster than fire here.” Emma’s stomach sank. “What exactly are they saying?” Before Lily could answer, a voice piped up from the row behind them. “Guess the new girl likes living dangerously.” A ripple of laughter followed. Emma’s cheeks flamed, but she kept her gaze on her notebook. “Careful, Sinclair,” another voice added. “Guys like Finn don’t do happily-ever-afters.” Her grip on the pen tightened until her knuckles whitened. She wanted to fire back, to tell them they didn’t know him—but something in her gut told her silence was safer. The teacher walked in, sparing her from more stares. But the whispers clung like smoke, refusing to fade. --- By lunch, it got worse. Emma was heading toward her usual table when a girl with perfect curls stepped in front of her, tray balanced on one manicured hand. “Emma, right?” the girl asked, smiling too sweetly. “Just some advice: if you’re trying to survive senior year, you might not want to hang around Crestwood’s resident bad boy.” Emma forced a polite smile. “Thanks for the advice. I’ll think about it.” She moved to walk past, but the girl leaned in, lowering her voice. “Or maybe you just like the attention. New girl, mysterious boy—it’s a cliché, but I guess it works.” The laugh that followed was sharp, cutting deeper than Emma wanted to admit. She fled the cafeteria before she could hear more. --- The library felt like the only safe place left, but even there, the rumors echoed in her head. She buried herself in books, trying to drown them out, when a shadow fell across the table. “You shouldn’t let them get to you,” Finn said, sliding into the seat across from her. Emma looked up, startled. “You heard?” “I always hear.” His eyes darkened. “They’ve been doing it for years. Don’t waste your breath fighting them.” Emma frowned. “But it’s not fair. They don’t even know you.” “Fair?” Finn let out a dry laugh. “This place doesn’t care about fair. It cares about stories. And I’m the one they like to tell.” Emma’s chest tightened. “And me?” “You’re just the latest chapter.” The bluntness stung, but she refused to back down. “Then maybe I don’t care what story they’re telling. Maybe I’ll write my own.” For a second, Finn’s mask cracked. His lips parted, like he wanted to say something—but before he could, the library door slammed open. Ryan. He strode in with his usual entourage, smirk firmly in place. “Well, well. The new couple’s favorite hideout.” Emma stiffened. “We’re not—” Ryan cut her off, his grin widening. “Relax, Sinclair. No one’s judging. Just wondering how long you’ll last before he breaks that pretty little heart of yours.” Finn stood, slow and deliberate. The tension in the room snapped taut, like a wire ready to cut. “Ryan,” he said, voice low, warning. Ryan’s grin faltered, but only slightly. “What? Just looking out for her.” “Leave.” The word carried a weight that silenced even Ryan’s friends. For a moment, Emma thought a fight would break out right there. But Ryan just smirked again, stepping back. “Fine. Enjoy your little library date.” He left, laughter echoing down the hall. Emma’s pulse thundered in her ears. She looked at Finn. His fists were clenched, jaw tight, storm brewing just beneath the surface. “You didn’t have to—” she began. “Yes, I did,” he cut in. The certainty in his voice left her breathless. For a long moment, they just stared at each other, words tangled between them. Finally, Finn exhaled, shoulders dropping slightly. “Stay away from me, Sinclair,” he said, though the conflict in his eyes betrayed the words. “It’ll only get worse if you don’t.” Emma swallowed hard, her heart torn between sense and something far more dangerous. Because even as Finn pushed her away, every part of her wanted to step closer. And that terrified her more than any rumor ever could. ---
