Chapter Nine – The New Circle
Aurora wasn't sure how it happened. One minute she was sitting at lunch with Elara, Maren, and Tessa, trying to focus on her juice carton instead of Lukas humming loudly beside her, and the next… somehow, the table had doubled.
Kael had slid in on one side without asking, Lukas sprawled across from her with his tray like he owned the whole cafeteria, and Maren (the transfer girl) perched gracefully at the edge, chin propped on her palm as if she were amused by the chaos.
For a second, Aurora thought her old friends would bristle. Tessa especially didn't usually share space easily. But instead, the strangest thing happened.
They clicked.
"So," Lukas said through a mouthful of cookie, flashing his grin at Aurora's trio. "Are you three the bodyguards? Or do you just follow Aurora around to scare off guys like me?"
"You don't need anyone to scare you off," Tessa shot back, arching a brow. "You do that yourself."
Lukas clutched his chest. "Ouch. Already attacking me. I like her."
"Don't encourage him," Aurora muttered, burying her face in her hands.
Elara, sitting to her left, giggled softly. "I think he's funny."
"Thank you!" Lukas announced, pointing at her like she'd just handed him an award. "Finally, someone appreciates my genius."
Kael, silent until now, leaned back in his chair, his gray eyes sweeping over the group with cool disinterest. "I wouldn't call it genius," he murmured, "but… it's something."
The table erupted in laughter—except Aurora, who groaned. She could feel her cheeks burning.
But as lunch went on, something shifted. Her old friends didn't push the newcomers away. Instead, they leaned in. Maren (her Maren, tall and sharp-tongued) was already trading quips with Maren the transfer, the two of them bouncing sarcasm back and forth like a competition. Tessa and Kael had locked into some quiet back-and-forth about books, their words clipped but their tones oddly… comfortable. And Elara? Elara watched it all with wide eyes and a shy smile, occasionally nudging Aurora like she couldn't believe it either.
Aurora sat in the middle of it all, blinking at the sheer absurdity. One week she'd barely been able to drag herself out of bed. Now she was surrounded by six people, laughter buzzing around her like a shield.
And it felt… good.
Annoying, chaotic, overwhelming—but good.
By the time the lunch bell rang, Lukas had declared himself Aurora's "official tutor in surviving boring classes," Tessa had rolled her eyes so hard Aurora thought they'd get stuck, and Maren (the transfer) had leaned close with a conspiratorial grin.
"You're fun," she told Aurora. "I think we're going to get along."
Aurora found herself smiling back. "Yeah. Me too."
As they gathered their trays, Aurora didn't notice the way her friends—old and new—kept exchanging glances behind her back. Didn't catch the subtle nod Kael gave Maren, or the way Tessa lingered close to her side like a shadow.
To Aurora, it was just a new friend group. A little strange, a little too easy, but comforting in a way she hadn't felt in weeks.
She had no idea that every one of them—except her—carried the same secret.
And none of them planned on letting her face what was coming alone.
